Alex
I am now struggling to get back any further for you. I think that you need to see the 1872 Marriage Certificate (or the Church Register) because......
1. There are several ladies called Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Ann) Jones, of the correct age (+/-1), on the 1871 and 1861 censuses in the Liverpool area but I cannot find one with a mother called Mary from Wales. The Marriage Certificate should provide her father's name and occupation which might help to identify her.
2. The GRO Marriage Index definitely says that Alexander's middle name is Philip but there is no birth for an Alexander Philip Buchan on the IGI. However
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ has him listed as Alexander
B Buchan.
On the IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/ there is an Alexander Bisset Buchan of the correct age. His parents are John and Isabella and when checked on the Scotland censuses for 1861 and 1871 John is a Fisherman and in 1871 so was Alexander. This seems to be consistent with Alexander’s occupation in 1881 in England. It may be (and it is only a possibility, nothing more) that the Marriage entry is not very clear and the words “Bisset” and “Philip” might have been confused by different people looking at it.
Either way, I think that sight of the Marriage Certificate or (better still) the Church Register entry is essential. They married at Liverpool, St Paul.
Sorry, that I could not provide more but I hope that what I have done proves to be useful to you.
