Bridge Foot War Memorial, Warrington
« on: Friday 12 October 07 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know Bridge Foot War Memorial?
I have been told that Thomas Armitage is listed, as a casualty of the First World War and would be very grateful to find out whether this is the case and what the inscription reads.

Can anyone help please?

There are a few general sites for war memorials you could check if no-one is able to answer specifically

http://www.carlscam.com/
is a Cheshire site with lots of pictures of memorials - it does "stretch" Cheshire, but I can't see the one you're looking for, though there are many Armitages on the memorials listed

That photo is taken outside the Town Hall, and not at Bridgefoot :)

Nothing for Warrington, unfortunately but thanks all the same.  It's so nice that people try and the information is bound to help someone.

There is indeed a war memorial at Bridge Foot.

It consists of a curved wall on which are bronze
plaques bearing the names of 1,100 military personnel
who gave their lives. In front of the wall stands
an obelisk bearing a bronze sword and the words “To
Our Glorious Dead”

I drive past it on my way to work, but I've never stopped to really look at it properly.

Check out http://museum.warrington.gov.uk/Images/your_history4_tcm22-7241.pdf for some info.

Also try http://www.warrington.tv/movies/movies2006.html - there is a link to a tv broadcast from there last year.

Hi Liverpool Annie

I'm sorry - I really don't know, although I know OF the Boer memorial.

I know that the Bridgefoot memorial is still used, as I see the wreaths there each year.

I actually live in Runcorn and attend the memorial services there, so I'm not really that familiar with the Warrington rememberance services.
