Lookup Please, 1841 Census, Liverpool COMPLETED
« on: Friday 12 October 07 00:35 BST (UK) »
Hi to all,

please can someone with access to the 1841 kindly look for the following:

Francis (Frank) Leyden living in Liverpool in the 1841 census, b/p prob Ireland.
Also, Alicia Fitzgerald who may be down as Alicia Leyden (they married in Mar 1841).

Via google books I've found he's related to my 3x Gt-grandfather - Daniel Charles Leyden and I'm hoping unlike my Daniel, Francis gives more a bit more info in the census than just 'Ireland' as a birthplace. This would be a huge wall to crack as I've practically given up trying to locate a county in Ireland to progress this line.

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

Kind regards Val.

Hi

The 1841 has a Frank Leyden b 1801 shown as "Irish" There is an entry under his but I can't decipher the christian name but it looks more like Lesley/Letty or Betty - not Alice or Alicia - she is 42 and also Irish and under occupation it just shows her as "his wife"

How old was he on his marriage cert?

Carole.

On the 1841 Liverpool Census Name Index the record I found is transcribed as:

HO107/565/3, ED 6, Folio 22A
LEXDEN, Frank, 40Yrs old, Clerk, Bn Ireland
LEXDEN, Letitia, 42Yrs old,        , Bn Ireland

Is this the same one?
Hertzberger, Highton, Walker, Eaton, Webster, Brown, Wright, Speed, Dodd, Holland, Melling, Murphy, Edwards, Bennett, Collins, Critchley, Duffy, Owens, Morgan & Humphreys

Dear Carole & Pegasuss,

thank you both for your kind help.

I'm just waiting for the marriage certificate for Francis and Alicia:
FreeBMD: Marriages Mar 1841
Leyden    Frank         Liverpool    20   171
Fitzgerald    Alicia         Liverpool    20   171

I think the census entry Pegasuss gives for them is correct but as is common, her name's been entered incorrectly. The court case like the marriage entry clearly gives her name as Alicia which sounds very much like Leticia so an easy mistake to make. Leyden is a very unusual name even in Ireland, in Liverpool at that time there was just Francis and my Daniel so it has to be the right one.

In the irish law papers referring to the case in Westminister of 1849, Francis is given as Dr Francis Leyden of Liverpool but that doesn't necessarily mean a medical Dr. In fact the 1841 census listing him as a 'clerk' fits in with Daniel who was an accountant/clerk. Equally, he may of used his wife's money, the subject of the court case to pay himself through medical school, lol.

Well, just to say a huge thanks to you both, more avenue's to explore now, maybe in a later census if Francis is still around he might reveal a bit more about Ireland (fingers and toes crossed).

Thanks !!!

Hi Pegassus

The entry on Ancestry is as follows and differs from yours
HO107 Piece 555/14  Folio 22 Page 37;

Ancestry have it as follows - Letitey Laytans and Frank Leyden.  The image has a "ditto" under occupation as the entry above was a clerk

The enumerators handwriting is awful

Hi again Carole,

not to worry, Ancestry has Daniel down as David Charles something or other in one of the census, I think it was the 1871, it took me ages to track him down, lol.

Thanks for looking in the 1851, I did a search myself last night but couldn't see any possible matches popping up, he may of emigrated or returned to Ireland. My his age I would guess he's the eldest child and when their father Charles died he probably inherited from him and returned back to the family home.

I love a challenge but don't you hate it when you keep coming up against that darn brick wall time after time? :-)

Thanks so much!
