Thanks Paul  :)

I'm thinking now that they possibly might have been non-conformists. St Austell miners, Bersham and the Midlothian coal mines had a pretty high percentage. This would mean that there would be no baptism in the C of.  A bit iffy about the burial though - I'm not sure if there were non-conformist graveyards in that area  :-\

It might be worth checking where daughter Sarah J married John Cochrane (between 1881-189) on Scotlands people. It might say 'according to the Forms of xyz church' and give us a clue.

Added - it was Church of Scotland, 30 Sept 1887 at Lasswade. Ann's maiden name down as what looks like Burkle  - not very clear  :(

Gadget,

Interesting to note her stated age as 19 - a wee white lie, possibly as she may have been in the family way with Robert. her death in 1946 confirms a birth circa 1870

Gadget,

The 1881 Census said that Nicholas went to the US (alone) however he must have returned as I have him in the 1891 census & then his death in 1913, Ann (wife) died in Loanhead in 1899, Mary Ann died 1931 in Loanhead & Sarah Jane 1946 in Motherwell. I have still to track William James's death and to find out what happened to Sarah (dob 1861 - poss  d1869 see earlier reply) & Bessy.

Mary Ann was my Gr x 2 Grandmother, she married Francis Young in 1876

Cheers

Yep, Bry

I did look at  the various Scottish censuses yesterday and told Deb about them (see above). We've been looking for the births and deaths of the two Sarah's since then. Bessy may have died on the way north from Cornwall  :-\

Hi Again,

Have just received the copy marriage certificate of Nicholas to Ann in October 1854.

Both are 21, Ann's surname, and of her father Jonas looks more like Baiklo. Do you know if this is a recognised surname?

Cheers

Hi Bry

Just putting that surname into the 1841 census  and IGI...come up with nothing ...The closest I can find  is a Geroge (sic) Bickle b Art Hill , Cornwall , on vessels Scotland in 1861... never heard of a place called Art Hill LOL

I am sure that Ann's surname has been mistranscribed quite often...see below ... I am sure that it must be Barkla as this seems like a far more common name in Cornwall. Also the Cornish accent may play a large roll in it being mispelled  ;D

(I had an Amelia Carnarton ,b Cornwall, who name was spelled Knoriton on her marriage cert LOL )

Hi Bry

I have been looking for a while for the Barkla Family in 1841 ....at last I have found them; they were transcribed under "BARKELL" and enumerator wrote them down as BARKELE  ;D

1841
St Agnes
JONAS Barkele (sic) 40 tin miner
Honnor   " 40
John       "  15 Tin Miner
Thomas  "  15 tin miner
James     "  14 tin miner
William    "  13 tin miner
Isaac      "   11 tin miner
ANN        "    8   ........................she married Nicholas Stephens
Mary       "    6
Henery   "    4
Samuel   "    2

all born in county

IGI has this extracted marriage:

Jonas BARKLA to Honor TONKIN
5 july 1823
St Agnes near Truro

deb :)

Maybe the way to go is to find a birth record of one of Ann Stephen nee Barkla's siblings  where it would show Jonas' surname .

What do you think ?

Hi again Bry

This may be one ... birth reg

Henry Barkla
Sept q 1837 Truro
Vol 9 pg 193

They also had a Samuel aged 2 in 1841

I cannot find a Samuel Barkla b 1839 but there is a Samuel Barklus Sept q 1839, Truro
vol 9 pg 266
I checked for a Barklus in 1841 and for a death of a Samuel Barklus... no matches .
