hi Bry

I will try to find out about the America bit ...have you found the family in 1891. When do you first find them in Scotland ? I am assuming there were there in 1871 as I have not been able to find them in 1871 on the UK census ...

Also just a note ...I have been on National Archives and put in Stephens, St Agnes Cornwall ...a few things pop up ... also on Ancestry there are two WW1 records for BARKLA/BARKELL/BARKLE who were born in St Agnes Cornwall.

I will look further

Hi Deb,

Yes I have Nicholas & Ann in 1891. They are staying with their married daughter in Lasswade, Midlothian. I cannot locate the family in 1871, the earliest I have them in Scotland is the birth of daughter Susan in 1873.

Ann is at the same address in 1881 (without Nicholas) as in 1891

Cheers

Hi Bry

I posted a message last night and it has disappeared  :-\

nicholas and family are definitely not in Cornwall in 1871, BUT I have found quite a few Stephens/ Stevens in WALES .... all born St Agnes. There is a very interesting family ... Nicholas, Ann, William, Mary A, Bessie and sarah ... I wonder ....

Do you have access or would you like me to post the details?

Hi Deb and Byr-l

Just been reading the last page of this thread. Interesting as there was quite an influx of miners from Cornwall to the North Wales coalfield at that time. A range of minerals were mined in the Minera area. Bersham became mainly coal mining.

Hi Gadget  ;D

thanks for that. I wonder why they left Cornwall in the first place though? Tin Mining was big there ...maybe it was the offer of more pay/better conditions?

I think there might have been a decline at some point (some bells are ringing from when I lived down there) and possibly the chance of more money.

Some of my rellies worked at Bersham  :)

Did you say where in Scotland they were - was it a coalfield area?

Not sure what was happening in Scotland , but Nicholas went to America for a bit too ... I wonder if that was to the gold fields ... unfortunately I don't have USA access so I am going to ask my cousin for help with that side ...
