My ggandfather Edward POWELL is reported on his death certificate of.25 June 1910 that he died of repiratory failure after falling from a horse drawn tram and being run over by ????(hard to see.  Died Bartholomews Hospital.  Certificate received 28 June 1910.  He lived Brewery Road Islington.  What newspapers might have recorded this accidental death.

Hello, Denise,

Unfortunately, newspapers did not always carry reports of accidents, nor have many coroners records survivied, I have never been successful in finding either for the accidental deaths that have happened in my famiily altho, the accidents in question were unusual.

As you grgrandfather died in St Barthomew's Hospital, try their Archive dept., they have always been very helpful in supplying info. when I have asked their help.  When an accident happens if the person involved is "dead on arrival" a the hospital no admittance details are kept but if they were alive on admittance & died within the hospital, records are kept.   On contacting the Archive Dept., give them all the detals you have, i e  all the info on the death cert. including who reg'd the death.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see contact info., Samantha was very helpful to me when I made enquiries.

By the way, if you want to know where Brewery Rd was, it is now called Paget Rd, just off the northern end of Goswell Rd. Clerkenwell

good luck,

Meliora

A distant ancestor of mine died at Bart's Hospital after an accident in 1893. The coroner's records were held at the Corporation of London Records Office, part of the Guildhall. I think these are now being held by the London Metropoliatn Archives, while refurbishment is going on at the Guildhall.

In my case I was fortunate in that the details were kept, and were in the form of witness statements, etc.

1910 is not much later than the period I was looking for, so you may be lucky.

Thanks for that.  I have contacted the LMA but they couldn't find anything.  Am hoping to be there in person sometime in April so will try again.

Hi Denise.

Brewery Road is actually between caledon ian Road and York Way. It starts opposite Pentonville Prison. Try the Islington Gazette of that time.
