1881 census says My grandfather, William Humphries, was born in Oldbury, Worcs 1872. But I can find no registration of this. Is it posible that Oldbury was a sub section of another town, where he would have been registered?

This may help:
West Bromwich
Created 1st July 1837. Mainly in Staffordshire, but included parts of Shropshire and Worcestershire.
Sub-districts : Handsworth; Oldbury; Wednesbury; West Bromwich North-East; West Bromwich South-West.
GRO volumes : XVII (1837-51); 6b (1852-1930).
Oldbury (from 1844), Warley (from 1844), Warley Woods (1844-1928).
Registers now divided between Sandwell and Birmingham districts.
