mormon look up for ziksby
« on: Sunday 07 October 07 16:54 BST (UK) »
Hello I  wonder if You can help . Can you give me any info on James Athay born circa 1831 Shipham Somerset married to Ellen. They came came to Salt Lake City in 1863. I  I am trying to find out which ship he came on, also which port he arrived at.
When families from the UK arrived in USA which route did they take to Salt Lake City. I believe James was on a wagon train circa 1863, I think this wagon train left Florence, Nebraska, but how did they get to Nebraska?   Iam assuming that they landed at New York.
Elijah Larkin  said in his diary that Sister Ellen Athay gave birth to a  girl at 9,00pm, this was on 21 September 1863
Any help much appreciated

Regards Ken

Some information here on Athay family:
www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneercompanysearch/1,15773,3966-1,00.html (put Athay in surname box)

Perhaps some decendants (not sure how common name is in Utah):
www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=&GSmn=&GSln=Athay&GSst=47

Question- who or what is ziksby?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Ken
I would imagine they travelled by train.
Family members of mine travelled by train from NY to Illinois in the same year(s).   Other travellers may have continued on to Nebraska (some 600 miles)
A google search about RR services from New York to Nebraska reveals quite a bit of information that may be helpful to you.
Kind regards
Valerie

This shows a photo of a Mormon Wagon train in 1879. The trek was not for the faint of heart!!

Hi
Found the following family arriving in New York
Year: July 20, 1863
Ship Name: Amazon
Port of Arrival: New York
Port of Departure: London
Destination: United States
Place of Origin: Great Britain
ATHEY
James 30, male, labourer
Ellen, 29, female
Mary, 4, female
William, 3, male
Martha, infant, female

I know the age is off a bit, but thought it worth mentioning.  If this is your Ellen, and she gave birth in Sept, she was most likely pregnant then during the long sea voyage. Don't envy her..

Microfilm roll: M237_231; Line: 26; List number: 747.

Regards
Valerie ;)
