Belfast Savings Bank?- Completed
« on: Friday 05 October 07 23:29 BST (UK) »
Belfast Savings Bank had branch on Church St. Ballymoney in 1940s (head office Arthur St., Belfast).
Tried Googling but only thing I really found was book 'Belfast Bank 1827-1970' (old passbook says 'established 1816').
Anyone know which bank took this one over (possibly in 1970s)?

Hiya

My research (assisted by The Times online) reveals that the Belfast Savings Bank was one of many banks that were formally amalgamated in 1970 to become "The Trustees Savings Bank". For more information about the TSB see here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trustee_savings_bank

The TSB became the TSB Group and in 1995 merged with Lloyds Bank to become "Lloyds TSB".

Thanks for the information. Found an old uncancelled passbook last night and wondering what bank it would now be. Will have to see if there's any money lying about....

Just to clarify:

The Belfast Savings Bank (founded 1816) merged with other Savings banks to form the Trustee Savings Bank in Northern Ireland but it did not merge with Lloyds. Unlike the TSB in England & Wales, TSB Bank Northern Ireland was bought by the AIB Bank (Allied Irish Banks p.l.c.) of Dublin, Ireland and merged with its branches in Northern Ireland to become:

First Trust Bank (otherwise AIB Group (UK) p.l.c.)

The headquarters is @ 92, Ann Street, Belfast

PJC (retiree of First Trust Bank)

p.s. I've cut out a few interim steps along the way to simplify!
IRELAND Baker Barrington Captain Clarke Copplethwaite Cullinane Cutler Doherty Donnelly Geale Gray Greenham Hegarty Hornidge Jefferes Macbeth McAteer McShane Molloy O'Donovan O'Neill O'Sullivan Star Whiteside
