« on: Friday 05 October 07 22:30 BST (UK) »

This request for information was made by some one from South Australia, but I have been unable to locate the site where I first saw the request. The address I jotted down was

Will be pleased to hear from any one looking for Joseph Clifton, or other members of that family.

Hi Dawn 55
Thanks for the info on the Clifton family who went to South Australia.
I am a descendant of the Joseph Clifton who died in Gedney Lincolnshire in 1846. He was my Grt/Grt/Grt/Grandfather.    I have managed to trace my tree back to 1668 up to the father of Joseph who was Thomas Clifton married to Anne (unknown).
All the Clifton family from 1668 up to the 1920's seem to have lived within 20 miles of Gedney so you can see that the area is flooded with relations.
Are you from South Australia ?  An aquaintance of mine who comes freom Adelaide and plays Grade A cricket for Southern Districts (Stingrays) tells me that the surname Clifton appears in his clubs records. It would be strange if it was one of my off shoots.
Do you know what happened to George Clifton after he arrived in Australia in 1855 ?

Hi Dawn
Been having trouble with my computor and this is the 3rd attempt at making a reply to your last message. No I don't live in Australia, but in North East Lincolnshire.  Until about 40 years ago I lived close to Gedney where our ancestors originated. I don't have the number of Clifton's on my tree that you have, but  I have traced 60 or 70. However, I have discovered a bridge near to Gedney, on one of the back roads in the fens, which is named Cliftons Bridge.  Have you any info on the book which was published re the Cliftons.  The Cliftons in Lincolnshire appear to have been farmers originally.   Regards.

Hi Tibby
The book which was published in 2008 was mainly on the Clifton's in South Australia but on the back inside cover there is a little bit on the Clifton family in the Gedney area. The book cost $60.00 Australian wheather is any left I do not Know,I will have to find out.
If you go to the web site of http:/wc.rootsweb.ancestery.com and type in the
name George Edward Clifton you will find a bit on the family, also go to William Trethown Tregeagle and look for marycotter web site E-mail adress for me,another web sit I found useful is familysearch.org which is the morman web site it is on Baptisms andMarriages,Burials.Thomas Clifton (buried 14.5.1712) who married Anne married10.2.1718 Gedney Hill a John Dunlin. She died 1739 buried 5.2.1739 Gedney Hill. The list of children as follows: Susan bap.1697,Mary or Harriett Ekinson bap. 1698,Thomas bap.1700,Ann bap.1702,Mary bap.1704,Elizabeth bap.1706 and married Charles Nicohols,Dinah bap.1709 and married Isaac Simms(Sims) Thomas bap.1711 married Ann Hubbart or Hulbart,married(2) Ann Lamb, married (3) Susannah Day.It is interesting though I found on that Morman site a Mary Wilkinson buried 15.9.1704 Gedney Hill parents Thomas and Ann Clifton and another Mary buried 5.5.1711 Gedney Hill parents Thomas and Ann Clifton.
