Looking for William's

I have one that I can not fit in anywhere..was a live in 1880 born pre 1860's

others are either dead or not in the right place at the right time

anyone got one......lurking in their tree..that they can not fit anywhere please..hiding in a cupboard...under a bed...married to some distant relative

A marriage.
Charles Sherrard to Mary Ternaghan, on the 14 August 1859, in Ralloo Presbyterian Ch., Ralloo, Larne.
Children.
1. "female", born 4 May 1868, Doagh.
2.  "male" ,  born 30 March 1872, Doagh.

The three below you may have got from my previous postings for Carnmoney Presbyterian baptisms.
1. Samuel, bapt., 7 May 1862.
2. Andrew, bapt., 13 March 1864.
3. Matilda, bapt., 2 June 1866.

He was the 5th child of
  John SHERRARD [of Ballyearl]
  Martha WHITTLE(Y) [of Kingsbog]

[JS was the first Railway Stationmaster at Randalstown.]


Not sure where WS ended up.
[But I know someone who might!]

A number of the children (of the 14 offspring in the family) emigrated to Philadelpia, USA:
  Mary Jane SHERRARD (m. Henry WHITTLEY)
  David SHERRARD
  Samuel Scott SHERRARD
  Eliza Moore SHERRARD
  Annie Wallace SHERRARD

Martha also went there in 1890 after JS had died in Belfast .

I had discounted him as he would have been only 14 at my GGG Grandfathers Samuel O'Neils death...in Ballyvessey.

Thought he might be a bit young...have discounted the others......beginning to think we have a new one to add to the oracle

so you think someone would not be too young to be a witness on a death cert then..?

Be careful that you don't get penalised for not having the "correct" number of "correct" men on the field at any one time!


Tentative Guess of your scenario:

You have a death record

   of            <somebody>
   who died <somewhere in Co. Antrim>
   in             <1880>

A WS signed as a witness to the event.

Your research goal is to identify his genealogical context.


Your assumption is that

     P) in order to have been a witness
           he must have been of full age (21);

so C) can not have been born after 1860.


I can't comment on whether this premise (and hence conclusion) is securely valid.

Can only note that it was common for "children" of 14 (12?) to be in full time employment at the time, so they may have been considered mature enough to be classed as valid witnesss.

So perhaps someone born as late as 1868 might have sufficed ...

[Note: The rules of the game were pretty loose at the time - sometimes several hundred players were allowed on the field!]
