Genes Reunited - trouble viewing other trees
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 20:27 BST (UK) »
I don't know if it's me or them, but I'm having trouble viewing the full details of other people's trees on GR.

I noticed it a while ago - someone opens their tree to me, I type in the name of the supposed common ancestor which then opens up as usual in the bottom half of the screen (under the relevant part of the tree). I get the name etc but cannot scroll down (i.e. no scroll bar on the right hand side) to see where baptised.

I've tried playing about with the size of the window but it makes no difference. Knowing me, there's probably something very simple that I should be doing to view the whole details - or is it GR? Is anyone else having this problem?

Your not the only one Jill. I have been having the same problem for at least the last three weeks. So far I have not really had a need to report it (I have been hoping that it would be fixed by now) as I have only been going on it in short spells to check up on any up dated trees and I am sure the two of us are not the only ones.

Thanks - at least I now know it's not just me. I must try to have more self confidence when it comes to technology!

Putting my cynical hat on for a moment, I can't think what advantage GR would gain from keeping this info from us, can you? So, presumably it's a fault. I'm not even going to bother reporting it - I've tried that before and they never replied. They always seem to be messing about with the site - if they would just leave it alone, I think we'd all be a lot happier.

They recently changed the format for viewing your so called hot matches and it takes twice as long to read them now than it used to! Plus, the site regularly freezes my screen so I have to switch my PC off and on again!

My subscription is up for renewal soon and I may very well choose not to renew it.

I don't know why they have to keep tinkering, as soon as things start to work they bung another spanner in the works!  It's a wonder they keep anyone on the site....

....second thoughts, maybe that's why I tend not to get so many replies these days, no-one's renewing their subs!

I reported it a couple of weeks ago and had a completely useless reply about checking my browser settings even though I said it happened with any browser and any machine. A second email said that their technical department were looking at it. Nothing since. Hopeless :-[

::) At least now I know it's not just me - I thought we used to be able to scroll down!!
I wish the other members would reply, it's always when the match seems a really good lead, you send a message and wait.. and wait ...and wait.....no reply  :P

Why is it that when asked to view your tree (after you establish there is a connection) so many people on there just take the details from your tree with no hint of a thank you or return any help  :(

Not like that on this site though

Glad it's not just me then.  It's been hiding the marriage details from me...only solution I could come up with was to hit F11 and maximise my browser screen.

Just seen this thread.

I am a member of Genes and, as you say, when accessing someone else's tree only part of it is visible.

Left click your mouse and highlight over part of tree visible, hold down and drag mouse downwards and the rest of the tree should appear (you will lose the top half).  Reverse this to go back up again.  Same process to go right and left if not all visible.

Hope it works for you.

Thanks Zephyr - that worked!   ;D

Why is it then that GR still haven't either put the fault right or advised its subscribers what to do to get round it - after at least 3 months?

I've got about 5 weeks left on my sub - and then I'm off.....

In the meantime, thanks to you Zephyr, I can at least check out some of the trees that I've been given access to recently!!   ::)
