Roden from Bilston/Wolverhampton area
« on: Tuesday 02 October 07 11:02 BST (UK) »
i am looking to trace the roden part of my family who moved from the bilston area in the late 1860's to manchester as they were coal miners. i have tried endlessly to find them in the area but to no avail. the earliest that i can find them is 1891 census living in Manchester. i haven't been helped by the fact that there are about 5 different spellings of the name Roden that i have come across. all i know is the following from later records.

thomas roden/roaden/rowden/rodden/roaden (b. abt. 1851) Bilston, Staffs
married to Mary Roden nee Sweeley (b. abt. 1854) Bilston, Staffs

any results or advice greatly appreciated
thanks
danlan

Your 1891 census gives this information

Mary A Wife M 37                                          " "
Daniel Son S 17 Coal Miner Lancashire Pendlebury
Richard Son S 15      "                  " "
Charlotte daur 1 " "
Daniel Morgan Boarder Widr 63 Staffordshire Bilston
RG12; Piece: 3209; Folio 107; Page 23

Do you know who Daniel Morgan is?

This looks suspiciously like the family in the 1881 census
No 3 Algernon Street, Worsley, Lancashire
Thomas Morgan Head Mar 30 Coal Miner Bilston Staffordshire
Mary Annie Wife Mar 27                             " "

At No. 7 Algernon Street is
Daniel Morgan Head Mar 53 Coal Miner Bilston Staffordshire

RG11; Piece: 3878; Folio: 52; Page: 23

Do you have the marriage certificate for Thomas and Mary Ann?  or a birth certificate for one of the children?

I think it possible that the name Sweeley might in fact be Sweeney badly written and if so then maybe her family could be found in the 1871 census still in Bilston, her father's name will be required from the marriage certificate.

It will of course, be much easier to try to find Thomas in the earlier censuses if you let us have his father's name also.

Hiya Danlan 12

Have you tried FreeREG? There are a lot of Roden BDM's listed on there - it might narrow the search down on the census

Hello

I am a decedent of the Roden family that you are referring to from Bilston. I have quite a bit of information of the Roden/Roaden family
