Royal Soldiers Daughters School Hampstead
« on: Monday 01 October 07 15:05 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm looking for information on this school.  It appears that it took orphans of soldiers but I'm not sure whether its criteria changed at all as time went on.

My great aunts were there in 1901.  I know they weren't there in 1891 but I reckon they entered the school in around 1895 ish.  Ideally I would like to know about them and what happened to them when they left.

The last I knew a lot of records were with the school (its now a boarding/day school I believe) and I believe they are not too keen on looking through them.  I wonder if anyone has any records, etc which would be of any help.

Thanks

NOVEMBER 1987, SCHEME OF 29 FEBRUARY 1988 AND RESOLUTION OF ANNUAL GENERAL
MEETING 11 DECEMBER 1991 AND AMENDED ON 9 JUNE 1999

Objects
TO NURSE, BOARD AND CLOTHE AND EDUCATE THE DESTITUTE FEMALE CHILDREN,
ORPHANS OR NOT, OF SOLDIERS IN THE ARMY, BORN DURING SERVICE OR SUBSEQUENT
TO HONOURABLE DISCHARGE OF THE FATHER. ALSO TO INSTRUCT IN INDUSTRIAL
HABITS, TO FIT THEM FOR DOMESTIC SERVICE.

There's some more about the history of the school on its own website here:
http://www.royalschoolhampstead.net/about_us_history.htm

The original aims were to: "nurse, board, clothe and educate the female
children, orphans or not, of soldiers in Her Majesty's Army killed in the
Crimean War"

Maybe we could try this another way .... what do you know about their father ? ... if you were to try and get his Army service papers ... you might be able to pick up a few clues about them ... if you would like to post his details .... we could look and see what we can find !!  :)

Yes, I do have this information already and have contacted the school but unfortunately they were very unhelpful.  I left my name, address and phone number and somebody was going to ring me back but guess what they never did!  I've tried ringing them again but had no success.

Really I guess want I to know is if its only the school who can access the records or does anybody else have info other than I have.

I do have the father's name etc.  He was Sergeant Frederick Hodges 3196 Royal West Surrey regiment and he was alive in 1895 but not his records.

I'm sorry if it appears that the information wasn't useful - it was.

As Leo says, the school were are still, not very helpful with supplying information.

I was in the school  with my elder and younger sisters during 1942-1944 living in the rented properties for the school in Moor Park-Sandy Lodge. My house, called Tile House,   was a few minutes walk away from the railway station. I had left by the time the school was re-instated back in Hampstead but my two sisters went back  there.

I had even asked them if, in their archives, they still had photographs taken during that time of all the school. There were several large ones taken besides the ones of girls who were privilaged to spend holidays in Sweden.   There was no response from them for this request.  I sincerely hope they have not discarded them for fear of being associated with the old school, now that they are the Royal School with their patron as Camilla Winsor.

My desire would be to get copies of these photographs to show my children, who now have children of their own.

The school has now closed and all the records are kept in Andover by the trustees they are compiling photos ect at the moment to be shown in London, when they are sorted they will post it on the web site to enable people to view. There is also a book about the history of the school with lots of photos old and new which you can buy reasonably.
You can get info about the royal soldiers daughters ( royal school hampstead) records at rshtrust.com
I was at the school 60-68 .  A group of my friends are currently trying to set up reunions again.

Emaline , I'm in touch with a few old girls from the school who might know of you and your sisters if I had your names and date at school. You can contact me via email sandy.harris@ ntlworld.com.
The name of the book is ' The story of the Royal School, Hampstead: 1855 to 2012'

Elaine, sad to say the school nis longer there.  It went down overnight a few years ago. All the parents were taken by surprised and stunned as they had been left without any notification about a possible closure.

A very good book  ( I have one) has since been printed about the school from when first opened to the closure, It has many photographs in it of which the later ones may be of you and your friends.
"The story of the Royal School, Hampstead. 1855-2912."

I forget where I got it from,so perhaps a search of the Internet with the above title will help you locate one.

Kind regards from a really old pupil there.
