help with world war one family members

Any help out there on world war one.
I have been doing my family history for a number of years now but have now decided to find out what I can about my grandads role in the first world war.    I don't know my grandads number.  All I know is he was a ferrier for the 3rd horse artillery.  I have not heard of the 3rd horse artillery.
I have a photo which did apparently have pictures of medals around it but my dad must have thrown that away.
The badge on his cap looks like it has the wheel and crown on top. 
Please any help to start me off.

Hi Wendi.  My grandads name was John Unsworth.  He came from Lowton in Leigh.  So I suppose his regement will have something to do with Lancashire or an area around his home.  His father was David.  I have found something about medals for a John Unsworth on ancestory.com but it was not him.  Any help to start me off on this road I will be extremely grateful.  Lizzy

Jebber identified the Regimental cap badge as being Royal Artillery.

There are medal index cards available at The National Archives for 5 men named John Unsworth, who were in the Royal Field Artillery, who received medals in WW1 - looking at the image references for them it looks like for one £3.50 you'd get them all, as you get 6 images to a page.  Here is the link

None of these men appear on CWGC so it would appear that they all survived the war.  To narrow down your options you can cross reference their numbers with the information on ancestry.com, but it maybe that you would have to go to The National Archives, and ferret for more information there

Thank you for all your information.  I have to go to work now but I will look into your advice further when I am next free.  My grandad did survive the war.  He died in the 1940's with a bad chest that had him laid up in bed for a couple of years.  He also worked in the mines as a ferrier.  Thank you Lizzy

OK I have downloaded the page from national archives.  There were five names but I have six cards on print.  I have to now figure them all out.  One of them says theatre of war Egypt.  I know my grandad was abroad.  So I will give that one a much more closer look.  Is it possible that there are other John Unsworths though that are not on this database?  Lizzy

All the cards you have are for men who went abroad, but it might just say "B2" or some such in that box as opposed to the actual place, sometimes there is nothing written.  :-\

There are medal index cards for 58 "John Unsworths" but we narrowed it down to those 5 by the cap badge ie those who served in the Royal Artillery.

Again I will have to close.  I will have to get in touch with my Uncle Freddy who is John's son and also joined the army as a cook and see what he can remember about his dad.  The trouble was, was Freddy was only 6 when his dad died.  You have been a great help to me.  Lizzy
