Help please - Noonan
« on: Monday 01 October 07 03:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to trace an ancestor called Ellen (Helen) Noonan (Nunn). From her death certificate is has her being born in 1821 in Limerick (not sure if town or county).

My first record of her is on a convict permission to marry in Tasmania, Australia in 1846. She was not a convict, only married one. So sometime between 1821 and 1846 she travelled either together with family or separately to Australia.

Can people please give me advice on how to start looking for Ellen in County Limerick. I have tried a few links that are mentioned in Rootschat to no avail. I am in Australia, so in person searching is hard if not impossible at present to do.

Any advice is very welcome.

Thanks

Clair

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I haven't found out any more information about Ellen, other than I found the christending records for her children in a Roman Catholic Church in Launceston, Tasmania, so feel that she was Roman Catholic.

I suppose it doesn't narrow the field at all, but it was good information for me.

What do you know of this aunt of your Ancestor????

Are you in the UK or Australia?

Hi , I was just reading you post on the Noonan ancestors.

I have an Edward Noonan who was also a convict and sent to Australia in 1835 aboard "HIVE" which was shipwrecked on the East Coast of Australia. Edward was Aged 30 yrs.
The date of his trial was 8 April 1835 at Limerick and he was sentanced to LIFE. He received a ticket of leave 9 Feb. 1844 and was allowed to remain in the District of Illawarra. (South Coast of NSW,  Australia)

He was married abt. 1830 to a Julia Lane from Ballyagran , Co Limerick. They had a son John Noonan born 1831.

His daughter, Catherine Noonan was Baptised 1834 at Parish/District FEENAGH & KILMEEDY. Edward was also known as Edmund on the baptism records. Other records we have found  have his name spelt as NUNAN & MOOHAN. (Just to confuse us).

Julia, John and Catherine Noonan came to Australia in 1849 on the "Panama" and settled in the Shoalhaven, Gerringong area of NSW. Edward died in 1866.  Edward was known as Edward Nunan on his death certificate and Julia as Julia Noonan on her death certificate in 1892 when she was buried at Berry, NSW.

Edwards father was John Noonan and we have found on the Griffith Valuations of Ireland, which would have been done around 1846-1861, the following Noonan's. We are thinking the John Noonan or Gortalassa may have been his father as the property is only 10 minutes away from where Julia was from at Ballyagran.

Noonan          Edmund            Clooncrippa                       Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          Edmund            Gortnagluggin                     Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          Ellen             Kilmurry (Archer)                 Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          John              Gortalassa                        Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          Mary              Feenagh                           Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          Mary              Kilmurry (Archer)                 Kilmeedy     Limerick
Noonan          Patrick           Highmount                         Kilmeedy     Limerick

If anyone has any links or more information for me I would be greatfull.. We are trying to find the Marriage certificate for Julia and Edmund Noonan in 1829/1830/1831 in Ireland and maybe other brothers and sisters that Edward may have had..

For Clair.
The IFHF website lists about  5 Ellen Noonan births  recorded in Co Limerick from 1817-1821.
It is a pay per view site and costs 5 pound per person... this is the site I used to find my ancestor Catherine Noonan....

There is one there for Ellen for 1821 and one for 1820. I would give them a go first..

Unfortunately it will be difficult to know if you find the correct baptism without knowing the parents' names. Since there are 5 Ellen Noonans listed in IFHF database it ould be any of them (since birthdates are so lose) or even none of them depending on coverage of the records for Co. Limerick, whether or not your Ellen's baptismal records still exists, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
