Professional Footballer? Nevins
« on: Sunday 30 September 07 21:00 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have access to the records of professional footballers from the early 1900's?

I have an ancestor, Tommy Nevins who played some type of professional football 1907 - 1913 (according to the 'since 1888' website)

My mother seems to think he played for a team such as Bishop Auckland (or somewhere in that area)

I dont really want to subscribe to the football website just to find out which team he played for!

thanks in anticipation!
Northumberland - Addison, Bowles, Kirkup, Lowes, Mason, Patterson, Richley, Venus, Wardle, Williams
Durham - Pears, Robertson, Richley, richelieu, Summerell
Norfolk and Essex - Bowles, Ninham, Wiseman
Glos - Summerell, Williams

Hi Shazzi

I had exactly the same question about a player about the same time.  I found bits of info here and there and then when I was at Kew the other day I found a fabulous book which lists all the teams and appearances of all the league players..

It's called

Football League Players' Records 1888-1939 (Paperback) by Michael Joyce (Author)

This is the info I found for my player..

Lockett, Arthur    OL/RB
B Alsager’s Bank 11/3/1877   d 1957

Caps: Flge    1/England 1
      Alsager’s Bank Friendly
      Audley
      Cross Heath
      Audley
      Crewe Alexandra
               Apps   Goals
1900    1902   Stoke         65   7
1902   1904   Aston Villa      41   5
1905   1907   Preston North End   64   5
      Watford
      Mardy

Perhaps if someone were going toKew they could look it up for you...(It was in the book library section at about 796.3)

ALSO .... I then wondered if he had been in the First War so checked the military service records and found his attestation papers etc with lots more info ;D ;D

Hi Gadget... worth buying if you have lots of people to look up but  for just one name it's probably a bit pricey as the info is not comprehemsive.

I was very excited with my one prof footballer ... having lots of them is very grande!  Mind you...mine did play for England (just once) in 1903.    ;D

If you have a list of names, teams and rough dates I could keep an eye out for pix and info when I look for my chappie if you like.

Hi Pegassus... does the PFA Who'se Who go back as far as 1900 do you know?

thanks

Milly :)
