1841/1851 census look up please james baker COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 30 September 07 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Please could anyone be able to look up James (b. about 1800 ) and Mary Ann Baker ( b. 1804 Dursley) living in Wotton under edge with children John, James, Sarah and Emma, maybe others.

I thought maybe I have asked for this before but I can't find any record of it in my files, so perhaps not. Apologies if so.

Many thanks
Moss

I suppose that there's a slim outside chance that the James Baker and Mary Ann (nee Camery) who were married in Chipping Sodbury in the March qtr of 1840 (From freebmd) are who you enquired about.

Regards

Chas

Chas

My James and Mary Ann were married in 1822 in Bristol. They'd had about 10 children by 1840 so I think it was probably a bit late to be getting married then ;)

Thanks anyway

Moss

Hallo there moss. Re James Baker of Wotton-under-Edge. I am his great-great grandson, and his eldest son Alfred my great-grandfather. Poor Alfred died in tragic circumstances. In the mid-1800s and in his mid-forties he was a prosperous and much respected stonemason living in Southsea in a large house with his wife and four children, and employing a servant. He was also a town councillor and rumoured to be in line for a knighthood for his services to the town. In the 1860s he made some unwise investments and lost a lot of money. He was also involved in a court case trying to regain a considerable sum of of money somebody owed him, but the case went against him and he was left bankrupt and facing the workhouse. So, frantic with worry and with the bailiffs knocking at his door he went up to his bedroom and impaled himself on a sword he had bought to deal with burglars, leaving a wife and four children, Naomi, Baroni, Claude (my grandfather) and Edith. He died on 21 December 1865.

Hello Baroni

How wonderful to find a member of the family!. James was my great great great grandfather. My father is the son of Henry Baroni Richard who married Ella Thompson. We have found out some details of Alfred and his unfortunate demise. My dad has tried to find out details of the court case but so far not much beyond the newspaper coverage of the time. He wondered whether Alfred's brother John had a hand in it somewhere.

After the family's relocation to London we know that Claude worked in a sweet shop, among other things. My dad has some recollection of Claude. We have been trying to find out his DOD.

We have been to see James Baker's grave in Wotton. One mystery is that the DOB on his gravestone is given as 1801 ( stone engraved by his son John Burgoyne Baker, so ought to be correct) but all records seem to point to him being born in 1800 to William Baker and  Betty Grafton. I haven't been able to sort this one out as yet.

Claude had 6 children that we know of. Presumably you are descended from one of his daughters? William died in WW1 and my dad has tried to piece together his war movements and many years ago went to France to see some of the battle sites. If you have any further memories of the family I would love to put you in touch with him, if you were agreeable. He has put together a family history which may be of interest to you.
