Italian Gothic by William Leiper  ???

That's awesome...and just for a carpet factory...obviously someone wanted to make the common place something that it wasn't...hmmmm. Now you've got my interest. Do you know who owned this factory when it was built? Why build such a beautiful factory because that's what it was... ??? A place of work...

mab

The city council refused planning permission repeatedly for this carpet factory because they didn't want to bring the tone of the neighbourhood down. Eventually, the owner of the site gave in and hired William Leiper to design a building that would not be considered an eyesore and this piece of architecture is what he came up with. Some say that the frontage was to appear like a carpet laid out on Glasgow Green, others adhere to the story that when the building was commissioned in 1889, the owner wanted a replica of the Doge's Palace in Venice.

It's me!  ::) ::)

I would have been here earlier but everyone who was there will
no doubt remember the tooth .. .. well party time now because it's
now back where it should have been on Saturday/Sunday!  :-[ ;D :-[

On a more serious note the photo's were one of the reasons I very nearly didn't attend! As Gadget and many others knew my tooth was a great source of embarrassment - up until Thursday I considered cancelling the accomodation. I explained to Julian though - in the scheme of things my problem wasn't even worth a mention!

I'd spent so long looking forward to it - not only meeting up with everyone but also Glasgow is very special. Not only the city in general but in my opinion the people are amongst the best in the world - if not the best!  :)

I'm not trying to be cheeky, but if I didn't want to be in a photo - I think I'd try and avoid standing in front of a camera. I think it would be the last thing on anyone's agenda to upset anybody, especially a fellow Rootschatter.

Anne

Anne if you look at the group photo I'm not visible or maybe just a bit in one but that was acceptable - my lack of inches would have otherwise warranted me a place on the front row of any other photo!  ;D

Plus what kind of a day would it have been if you had to spend every second looking over your shoulder .. .. to see who was doing what?  :-\

Dave has very graciously sent me a lovely PM and of course his apology is accepted - it's just Ricky that needs sorting out now!  ;D ::) ;D

especially of all those men in kilts staying in our hotel ;D 8)

You weren't saying that on Sunday morning!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
