Now I have a question to stir the pot here! If Edinburgh is our capital city why is our national team's (footie that is) home ground in Glasgow? The hallowed ground of Hampden Park!

Possibly something to do with Queens Park who are based at hampden and who are credited with being the oldest club in Scotland . The first Scotland team to play against England had  all 11 players from Queens Park.

uuurrgghh whisky/whiskey :P :P :P :P

I can't even stand the smell of the stuff, let alone the taste.  But each to their own ;D

Is it pronounced Hwhisky in Scotland?  One of my work colleagues told me the other day that while she  was at school in Edinburgh, they were taught to say Hwhat, Hwhy, Hwhere etc, which is a good way of learning the words with wh, as long as they don't put the H at the beginning ;D

Response frae ma mate Mick.

"The probable answer is because it was the first.

That is, the first purpose built ground capable of holding the vast crowds that were going to football matches, the fastest growing spectator sport).  The world's first international football match between Scotland and England was played at the West of Scotland Cricket ground in Partick. It finished 0 - 0. Some of the players apparently wore monocles!

Additionally, the working class masses of the day in Glasgow were more likely to be seen at football games, than at the more gentlemanly sports of cricket and rugby, favoured by the Edinburgh people.  Scotland's national rugby stadium is of course in Edinburgh (Murrayfield).

Incidentally, did you know that Hampden Park was named after an English lord and civil war general, John Hampden. Not surprising really, when you look at the street names around the south side eg Victoria Rd, Albert Rd  etc."

Dave

ta. Dunno why it had never occured to me before about it being in Glasgow cos is just there! Think you're right maybe about the audience.

I knew where it had got its name from. Can;t remember how I know but I did. Probably something at school and that was a wee while ago. ;D

Cheers for that

Ann
