Cockshutts and Kildwick
« on: Saturday 29 September 07 19:20 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me make a link between John Cockshutt, magistrate and Kildwick.  The family story has it that he rented Kildwick Hall between his birth 1749 and death 1812.  The graveyard at Kildwick is full of Cockshutts.  My mother remembered seeing his robes of office.     Thanks for all your help,  Thorny

I can help verify some of the information for you  ;D

firstly, I presume you meant to put the name Cockshott, not Cockshutt.

From the burials at Kildwick:

John Cockshott.
John of Kildwick Hall, a gentleman, buried 17/12/1812, aged 62 years.

There was only Cockshotts mentioned in the parish registers no Cockshutts.

If you have any other names of this family in Kildwick would be pleased to look up for you.

Hi Thorny,
just doing a follow up of the p.m. you sent me.

You are trying to link your Thomas Smith, 1837-1920 who married Ellen Steel Brooke in 1858 to the Cockshotts of Kildwick, Am I correct?

I noted in other threads that this would be the Thomas you referred to in your p.m. as possible having a mother who was a Cockshott.

Did you get the marriage certificate mentioned above? (Thomas Smith to Ellen Brook)
If so, what is Thomas' fathers name, please.

Do you have Thomas' birth information - cert. or IGI details?
If so, do you have his mothers name?

I have found numerous Cockshotts in Kildwick, but cannot link until I have the above info verified.

Regards Margaret

Hi Meg,  According to this family tree I have been trying to verify we are supposed to be related to a John Cockshott that lived in Kildwick Hall.  However that has been shotdown as I have just learned(via another helper) that  Ruth, a dau. of John Cockshott was a spinster.  Ruth was supposed to have married a Smith and have been my gggrandmother.  So now I'll have to find out how to get my ggrandfathers birth cert.  I'm 70 so this mental exercise is supposed to be good for me.     Thorny

Hi Thorny,
yes, I did see Ruth in later years on the census as a spinster.

sometimes it is safer to work back rather than try to link to someone and meet them half way  ;D

Did you get the marriage certificate I mentioned?

When you get either certificate please let me know so that I may help you.  Unfortunately I do not have anything for Keighley parish records to help you with in the earlier records.

Thorny,
just had an afterthought, it could be possible that you are linked to the Cockshotts through the wife of John Cockshott.

Kildwick parish records:
John Cockshott of Silsden Moor, weaver, bachelor, to Hannah Smith of Silsden Moor, minor, married on the 28th October 1773. at Kildwick.
It is this couple who had a daughter Ruth

From the IGI,
Ruth Cockshott, b. 18th sept 1788, Silsden, Kildwick, baptised 21st Sept 1788 Kildwick.
Parents -  John Cockshott and Hannah.

It is this Ruth that shows up in later census as a spinster.
1851, Ruth is age 63, unmarried, born Silsden. Housekeeper to nephew.
HO107/2288  folio 122 P. 64

There is quite a lot of children for this couple, I do not have the baptisms only what is on IGI, but found a couple of burials for some of their children.

Of course you would need to work your way back on the Smith line to see if there is a link - and we all know how much fun the Smiths can be.

cheers
Margaret

Hi Little Meg, My name is Brian Payne of Wakefield. I am also now engrosed in the search to link T W Smith son of Thomas Smith. Are you local to Kildwick?
I often come up over to Keithley and have only this week made contact with another member of a family with the same surname as my own, and from the very next village in suffolk where my family originate from;  but the link betweens has not yet been proven. However it is a fact that the image of his father in a photograph taken only a few years ago, well one could say we were brothers.
The Smith - Cockshott intrest is due to the wife of Thomas William Smith being the Greant Aunt of my father. on her birth certificate she is named 'Sabina' however throughout her life she was known as Lavinia. TWS and a couple of sons emigrated to Canada; where they found better prosperity and were joined a couple of years latter by Lavinia and several more of their TEN children. I hold a 'Journal' of a Smith descendant who made the trip over in 1983/4 in search of his roots; from which I learned of the Cockshott link.
I too am now getting on in years and are retired so I have the freedom of time to be able to travel. I need urgent assistance in this quest as yet again only TWO days ago rekindled the Canadian link to 'A Might Be' descendant who is now reasearching his own history through a his grandfather with the same forname and initial as one of JWS's sons.
Please copy in or contact my intrest to 'Thorny' as I am too. A Three person intrest is better than Two.

Hi Charlie,
thorny will get an email letting him know of a new posting to his thread. Or you can send him a personal message.

I am not researching this particular line but since I have a cd for the parish registers for Kildwick I thought I might offer some help.
No, do not live in Kildwick nor am I local to it - I live in Australia!  ;D

I have ancestors from Kildwick, my Simpsons and Overends hence my added interest.  ;)

cheers
