Joseph Lawson Reed

This name is constantly used in our family tree.

The 1st JLR was born about 1826 in Alnwick.  He married Margaret Bell but mysteriously vanished shortly after the death of his son JLR in 1856 (he was present on the death certificate).  He is not present in the 1861 census and we have spent many hours searching the censuses with no luck.

The 2nd JLR was born in 1873 in Tynemouth.  He was the grandson of the 1st JLR.  He married Mary Stott.  They too had a JLR in 1898.  They are both on the 1901 census living in 28 Linskill Street, North Shields.  Again we have spent many hours searching the BDM Indexes with no luck.

Any information on any Joseph Lawson Reeds would be gratefully accepted !

C1841 828/2 58-9 Joseph=Ironmonger 15 yrs (probably rounded)
C1851 2410-161-46 Joseph L = Ironmonger 27 yrs.
C1861 3842-37-8 Margaret categorised "Married", no JLR
C1871 5120-18-30 Margaret categorised as "W" for widow. Last child = Sarah A 3yrs.
C1881 508-15-23 JLR number three, 7 yrs , son of John G/Margaret Reed
C1891 JLR 3= 17
C1901 JLR3=27, JLR4=2.

Although marriage of JLR3/Mary Bartlett Stott was registered with South Shields Reg District Dec Qtr 1896, their three children ( by C1901) were registered with Tynemouth Reg District, JuneQ 97, DecQ 1898, DecQ 1900.

Have you eliminated the Joseph Reed death registration.... sorry I am on "foreign" PC... likely to lose this info...

A browse of Trade Directories for the era might give clues about missing JLR.... by including him, then not ??

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your info.

It is very puzzling with our first Joseph Lawson Reed.  We have contact with an ancestor who has a family bible but it doesn't say where he went when he desserted his family !

Even more mysterious is that this ancestor optained Sarah's Birth Certificate - Father states a merchant seaman called Peter Reed ! When Sarah got married to Robert Storey in 1890 the certificate states her father as being dec'd and was Joseph !  Peter is as yet no relation and we can't even find anyone on the censuses with a similar age to Margaret (nee Bell).

Have looked in the Historical Directories - nothing found.

Will have to contact this ancestor to see if she has obtained any death certificates for any Joseph Reeds to avoid duplications.

JLR that you are looking for was my grandfather.  I have some info, however, as I am new here, can't send personal messages in reply to your message.  I have a birth certificate and a copy of the marriage certificate in NY, USA.  I think I also have a copy of the death certificate somewhere.  Moved year and a half ago, just cracking open the boxes with all my family research in it.  Researching my husband's family as well.  lol.

I will post what I have.  If you want copies of the certificates let me know and we can exchange email addresses and pdf files.
