Hiya all,

I would just like to add to the confusion of this family.

I have traced the "Grindy" family and the Hannah Grindy listed with the above McMahon family seems to be a Hannah McPerson and she married Joseph Grindy in 1858. Now what is interesting is that I've been in touch with a direct descendent of this family and she had no idea of Hannah's maiden name but thought that the name should be Mc Mann and possibly a scottish name. Mc Mahon isn't far from Mc Mann and could a Northern irish accent been mistaken for scottish accent??? I suggested she sent off for the marriage cert to see if there has been a mistake on the index or whether possibly Hannah was married to a Mcperson before.
Hannah had died before the 1871 census and the children are living with their father.  There were two other children to Joseph Grindy and Hannah
Emily b.1863 Longton and James Bernard b. 1865 Longton.

Hope this helps you Nicki and that you come back to let us know how you are getting on with researching this family.

All the best and good luck

Heloooo!
thanks for the info,It now looks like Hannah's daughter Mary Ann McMahon was illigitimate she then marries Joseph Grindey and they have 4 children Sarah,Emily,John and James.Hannah dies in 1969 ,James is only 4.From what you have found Anjo it looks like there was also another child Hannah Emily? The plot thickens, still have no more info on Mary Ann's  father and perhaps never will know.
thanks again

Hi Nickoli

:-[ I missed a comma after Hannah.....it should have read two other children to Joseph Grindy and Hannah,

Emily b. 1863 and James Bernard b. 1865 sorry to confuse you further.

If you are certain that Mary Ann McMahon's mother Hannah married Joseph Grindy did you get the marriage cert???

I am presuming that Mary Ann's birth cert had a blank for father.
Did Mary Ann get married and did that shed any clues to her father?

The other thing that you might get lucky with is Mary Ann's chr record. In some cases even when the child is illigit the priest/vicar will state the reputed father.
(but not in all cases).
There is such a thing as bastardy bonds too which if Hannah tried to claim money off the father then there could be records. I am not too well up on how to check these bonds but i'm sure some kind soul on here could point you in the right direction.

Did you ever manage to find Mary Ann on any of the census?? Will gladly take a look if you havent the info.

Anyway All the best with your research and the best of luck to you.

Angela.

Hope you still check in with rootschat. I have been doing this part of my tree again and found this.

Maria Anna McMahon chr 1 Jan 1852 St Austin's, Forebridge, Stafford, Staffordshire to parents George Deveny and Hannah McMahon.

(name is in latin so would be Mary Ann). I think this is your Mary Ann and now you have a possible father to her. Sorry if you already have this info but thought I'd share it anyway, just incase.

Most of the McMahon family that belong to Hannah used this church for christenings

All the best Anjo
