County Asylum Prestwich (Updated)

Hi

Has anyone got a copy of the County Asylum Prestwich Cd  who could do a lookup for me please, i would be most grateful.
I am looking for Edwin Mayall  born 1844 Oldham, who i believe was admitted into the asylum some time between 1891 and 1901.

I have Edwin on the 1891 census RG12/3322 f 26 p 48 with his wife and children in Royton he is noted as being a lunatic.
On the 1901 census i think i have found him in Prestwich Asylum, Rg13/3779 f 84 p 25 as E Mayall, married, 51, ?? in Cotton Mill, Oldham again noted as a lunatic.
His age is a few years out but i still believe it could be him.

Mayall Edwin Admitted 2 Aug 1886 as male patient no. 6269. Birthplace unknown
Age 41.Married Religion C of E. Cotton Operative.Died 12 Jan 1889.
Lancs Record Office Ref QAM 6/6/25.

Doesn't quite fit your census info unless discharged mistranscribed as died.
You need to visit Preston or see if somebody will look up his hospital records there for you.

I finally managed to get to Lancashire Records Office to see Edwin Mayall's notes from Prestwich Asylum.

The referances and info you gave me were for the right Edwin Mayall my gg grandfather.

He was admitted into the asylum on the 2nd Aug 1886. On admission he had,  Mania - Delusions and Hallucinations.

The last entry in his case notes was March 1888 says that he was much calmer, it dosen't state weather he died or was discharged. I think he was discharged as i have found him on the 1891 census with his wife and family and then some time after the census he must have been readmitted and was there until he died.

There was also a letter included in the case notes which he had written to his wife Elizabeth, he wrote that it wasn't his fault that he was like he was it was someone inside telling him what to say and do, he asks her to come and see him and also to tell his brothers James and Robert to go and see him.

At the end of the letter it has Lansdown Spinning Company, Middleton Rd, Oldham. Which is where they lived when the 1891 census was taken.

His other records could probably be at Manchester Records Office, which is where i am heading for tomorrow.

I'm glad you found some interesting info.I believe that from the 1890s all the inmates were photographed so you might find his picture in Manchester.
my own gg grandma was in Prestwich under an assumed name supposed thought someone was trying to poison her.She was an epileptic and classified as an imbecile.It's sad isn't it though I'm not sure that people with mental probs get treated much better now.

Ps I am transcribing Shaw Parish records up to 1850s so if you got any missing Buckleys etc send me a PM the early records got people coming down from Saddleworth to use the church.

Thanks for the link, i haven't seen that link before.

Yes it's amazing to find all this info, it's given me more of an insight of his life. It was so sad to read the details of his illness, and also the letter that he wrote to his wife, he must have felt so alone. His family must have felt the same.

Thank you for Kenhar's photo link.

I have been to Central Library today and found the burial details for my Edwin, he was buried at St Mary's Prestwich on the 17th Jan 1907, now to send for his death cert.

I was trying to get to Manchester Record office as well today to see if they have his later case notes, but got delayed will try again tomorrow.
