I have just looked at the actual 1881 entry on the census image and it does say Catestone or possibly Catistone. So either the enumerator didn't hear correctly or he was confused by your ancestors broad northern accent  ;D

Carol (2 messages back),

Thank you looking at the 1881 original. Funnily enough, I was thinking that William might have had a slight speech impediment. There are a couple of odd interpretations, and somehow Livesley became Livsley just as state education came into play. I am pretty sure that John was born in Capstone - there is a lot of circumstantial evidence now to support that.

Maidmarianoops!,

Well! Many thanks.

Jabez we have in 1851 and 1881 so that is a nice piece to add.
The others are probably related, but don't quite fit at the moment! The Featherstone family is interesting. My wife is descended from the John born in Capstone (living in Walmersley near Bury). She was born in Preston, but grew up near Featherstone - although all the immediate Livsley relations were in Lancashire. Her whole family appear to be nomads - her father was born in Bury, grew up in Andover (Massachusettes!), then returned to Preston.

Ive just discovered this site through typing in William livesley into google and this thread came up, i am trying to trace a William livesley born 1819 (i think ) in disley, which i thought was cheshire, but perhaps it  used be derbyshire. My livesleys were printers in manchester, and i think williams father was a john. can anyone help me out whether my family is connected to the livesleys you are discussing? thank you

Julie,

I'm going to send you a PM.

It is almost certain that you are related to wife's Livesley family.

Disley is ion Cheshire, but New Mills, Derbyshire is only a mile away. Catstone is most certainly Catstone just north of New Mills.

Our William was born in 1813, and there was a large clan of Livesleys in the area. Your William, may be the same as ours or a cousin.

My G G G Grandfather was William Livesley born 1813 in Hayfield Derbyshire.  He was baptised 20/02/1814 at Wesleyan Chapel, New Mills. His father was John and his mother Hannah from Disley in Chesher. I am a descendant of William Livesley and Martha Stafford's son James.  Is this William the same as your wife's William?

Hi Nigel

(sorry, might be being a bit dim, cant work out how to reply to a pm)

I got the name of William's father from a baptism record http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/newmills_wes_bapt/newmills_wes_bapt_7.html.  Did you know that William had a brother called Thomas born 1815.  And that Martha Stafford's father, Peter, was Drowned at Bugsworth in the Canal, according to the Diary of John Warren.

I dont think James is alive in 1891, his wife is living in Bolton Lancs with son George, adopted daughter Sarah Chandslam age 8 and a 8 month old baby called Betsy Holdon who is listed as "daughter" - need to think about that one.

All the best
Lorraine

I have seen that baptism. But, the marriage of William Livesley & Martha Stafford gives his father as James - a Farmer. Transcription is on www.Disley.net under Taxal Registers Marriages.

LIVESLEY
 William
 labourer
 Whaley
 James Livesley

 STAFFORD
 Martha

Are you a subscriber to Ancestry.co.uk? Our tree is on there - we have 8 siblings for William. If not, I can send what we have to you even if it has to be bits at a time!

I didn't know of Peter Staffords drowning - was he drunk?

Cheers,

Nigel & Susan

PS, I think after 3 Posts you can send a PM???
