Where was/is Catstone?
« on: Monday 20 December 04 13:19 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where, in Derbyshire, Catstone was (c.1850). I can't find it on a modern map. I am expecting somewhere in the NW of the county? Google comes up with a place near Wirksworth/Matlock, which doesn't seem right.

Many thanks.

Thank you for the search - but I think Nottingham will be too far away.

I am going to look at the original 1881 Census image to see if his birthplace has been mis-transcribed. There is what looks like a farm called Capstone near New Mills/Mellor in NW Derbyshire which I just came across by chance. This would be a more logical location.

But for now I'll add the location you so kindly found to the possibilities.

John Livesly/Livesley is the person my wife is researching. Unfortunately, there is no place called Catestone that I've found in Derbyshire, and only Catstone Barn near Wirksworth or the place you found near Nottingham that might work.
But, I have now (yesterday!) found John in the 1841 Census living in Disley, Cheshire. His birthplace is given as Mellor, Derbyshire. There is a farm to the south of Mellor on the OS Map called Capstone. John's father came from New Mills. New Mills, Disley, Mellor are all within a few miles of each other, around NW Derbyshire. So, I'm thinking that Catestone must be a transcription or entry error in the 1881 Census.
Many thanks for your help

Thanks, Sylvia.

I'm sure that they all fit somehow.

People seem to have been more mobile in the early 1800's than one is led to believe. I have an ancestor who moved from Ayr to Poplar, London before 1800. My wife's ancestor moved from Disley/New Mills to Bury at the same time his uncle went to Blackburn (he later returned with a wife and two children - at least). My wife's father, born in Bury, grew up near Boston, USA - but returned to marry her mother!! Talk about nomads!

 Happy New Year,

Nigel

Many thanks.

Do you have the year?

Unfortunately, both Martha Ann and Samuel Livesley are 'common' family names. But there is a Martha Ann (b. 1835) with a brother who was a butcher - so that would be a nice fit (he hopes!).

I tried a quick Google search but didn't relocate the page.

Best wishes,

Nigel
