The cattle stealing guy was 47 in 1845 making him born 1795 also said a labourer.  The one in the 58th foot was still in the army then - discharged 1853, so cannot be him. 



No, in 1845 the cattle-stealing guy arrived on the ship North Star which happens to be the ship which brought the 58th Regiment of Foot over from Sydney to NZ.

The same cattle-stealing guy was 47 in 1868, that's the year the newspaper reported his prison sentence which makes him born 1821.

He was unmarried, an Anglican and a labourer in 1868 which is 15 years after his discharge from the army.

ummmm 3 yrs out on the birth.  Hope to find something out at TNA this weekend on the 58th foot regiment, pay lists, musters etc.
