One would think that the eldest child Margaret that was born around 1850 would prob make the 1853 marriage the closest?  But I guess I could be wrong hey.

or one wife died & John remarried....

Will need to obtain some copies of birth & marriages,
otherwise you can never be sure.

You don't want to 'adopt' a family     :-\

Could start with this one.

Marriage
John Alfred Collier ~ Susan Gwilliam
Year 1904 Qtr Dec Dist: Salford  Vol 8d pg 113

The marriage will confirm fathers name & occupation & hopefully one of his siblings was a witness.

You can get the copies of certs from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

The cost of a cert is £7 sterling. I  think thats about 17 Aus$
Postage is inclusive.

Heading off to bed.
Happy hunting.

I already have a copy of the marriage cert of John Collier & Susan Gwilliam.  I also have a copy of his fathers marriage cert Alfred Collier.  It states:

Married in Manchester 1878 in the parish of St Jude, Manchester.  He married Elizabeth Ambrose on the 3/6/88.
His father was John Collier - Auctioneer
Her father was John Ambrose - Confectioner

Thanks for your help.  I better head to work.
