Records of the French Foreign Legion
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 12:55 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor that allegedly served in the French Foreign Legion "for a time", probably after 1918.

Does anyone know whether records (service records or otherwise) are available for the French Foreign Legion and if so, where I might find them.

Thanks.

Just wondering if anyone can answer this question about records of the French Foreign Leigon:

Found this little snippet about my grandmother's cousin:

'Julian Strange Bartholomeusz, mentioned in section
XXXVIII, 1, was in London when war broke out in
August 1914. He sought Enrolment, but at the time no
Non-English were being taken on, and so he crossed
over to France and joined the famous French Foreign
Legion, H^ was awarded the Croix de Guerre (French
Military Cross) and was offered a Commission which he
refused as it involved taking French nationality.'

{Section XXXVII refers to a genealogy published in the  Journal of the Dutch Burgher Union  in 1948}

Thank you.

As a British Citizen from the Colony of Ceylon the British Army or any other service should have accepted him. This extract comes from the same source as his French Foreign Legion records and contains vast amounts of Barhoiomeusz genaealogy. The following is slightly edited by me.

Louis Ursinus Barthoiomeusz, born 11th April 1857, died 1st June1925, married in Christ Church, Matale [Ceylon], 5th June 1878, [to] Julia Ursula del Sielwie born 29th May 1863, died 26th October 1930, daughter of Dionygaas de Sielwie and Cornelia Petronella Dorothea Rabot.
