Registration district of Hanwell lunatic asylum
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 01:08 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping to send for the death certificate of my gr x3 aunt Jane Lawson, who was in Hanwell lunatic asylum in 1881.  I can't find her after that, so I assume she died before the 1891 census.  I was wondering if anyone can help me with the registration district, because there are quite a few Jane Lawsons who died between 1881  and 1891 in London.

As I'm not from that area, I haven't got a clue, but maybe somebody can set me off on the right direction.  She was born around 1829-31 so there a couple of favourites already.

Thanks

Rosemary

P.s Don'tknow why that hasn't worked , but you might try typing it in.

Tried that and still not working so you'll have to "Google"  Hanwell Registration which took me to Genuki and you could also try Hanwell asylum

I found this ..........  ::) does this help ??

The Middlesex county asylum for pauper lunatics bears the name of Hanwell asylum, but is beyond the parish, within Norwood precinct; was erected at a cost of £125, 000; stands so on an eminence as to be well seen over a long distance around; has undergone great improvement; possesses large gardens, with beautiful walks; and contains accommodation for 1, 500 inmates.

Since you have found her in 1881, the piece number (the part after the RG11) will locate the registration district.  Census districts are based on registration districts.  I presume she is the one shown at RG11/1336 at St Bernards Hospital in Norwood?

Go to the National Archives catalogue page:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp?j=1

Type in RG11/1336 in the box on the top left hand side and click "go to reference"

It says the RD is Uxbridge.

There is a Jane Lawson, much younger than this, in the Central London District School in Hanwell in the 1881 census.  Reference is RG11/1356.  The registration district there is Brentford, sub-district Acton.

This site: http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/england/MDX/middlesex_asylums.htm

has this information about Hanwell Lunatic Asylum

Quote
Hanwell Lunatic Asylum

In the Parish of Norwood is the Hanwell Lunatic Asylum, belonging to the County of London, first erected in 1829-1831, but since repeatedly enlarged and greatly improved. The building is constructed of brick in a simple Italian style, and consists of a central block with projecting wings at either end, both in front and rear are spacious grounds laid out with lawns and avenues of trees. The different wards are well equipped with books and games and musical instruments. The asylum will hold about 2,520 inmates. The Chapel, in front of the main entrance, erected in 1880, is an edifice of brick, in the early English style, and has a lofty tower with spire containing one bell. There are about 1,000 sittings.

So I think you should be looking in Uxbridge.

By 1891 the full names of patients in lunatic asylums weren't always given ................. try looking for J L b.Whitehaven (I assume that is her birthplace).

I think the place you need is St. Bernard's, Uxbridge Road, Southall.  I remember walking through some of the corridors there once, going for an interview for the New Ealing Hospital which was built next door.  Evidently, at one time it was a 'flagship' for humane treatment of it's residents.
(It was also used for some filming of 'Porridge')
