CROMBIE/PARK
« on: Sunday 19 December 04 22:19 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info on John Crombie (b. c1821) and his wife Susannah Park.  They came to Scotland around 1855-60.  Census returns here show their place of birth as County Down, Ireland.  All of their children were also born in County Down between 1840 and 1854.  They appear on the 1861 census for Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland but it is difficult to find any record of them whilst in Ireland.
Would love to get details of their marriage/parents/children/place of residence....anything!!

Thanks

John

Hi John,

I was going to suggest Ros Davies' Co. Down, Ireland Genealogy Research Site but it only shows one Crombie who was in Holywood in 1910. The extracts of Griffiths Valuations on John Hayes failteromhat.com website show one Crombie in Ireland in 1854 ...

Esther Crombie, Montrath, Rahugh. Westmeath

Have a look at www.familysearch.org It contains 113 matches for the Crombie surame.

John- in order to do any research anywhere in Ireland you will need more information than just the county. Since the Crombie children were all born before the start of civil registration of births (1864) and their parents were married before marriage registration (1864 Catholic, 1845 Protestant) you will need to search for church records. To do so you need to know what religion they were and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) and then see if the records still exist.
Fortunately Scotland has some fanstic records and they are available online at Scotland's People (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). See there for what you should find on birth, marriage and death records. From some of the Scottish certificates you might be able to get date and place of parents' marriage, birthplaces in Ireland, etc. Have a look there and then when you do have more information post the details so someone can tell you how to find more.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi John,

If Cromie and Crombie are variations of the same name there are a fairly large number of Cromies in Co. Down.

Thanks for the replies - it's been THREE years since my post!

I have all the Scottish records, unfortunately the only one that gives any sort of clue is the 1851 Census which gives the place of birth for all the family members as (looks like DRUMANAGHAN?) County Down.  Other census records just say County Down.
I would be grateful if anyone can offer advice.  I am in Scotland so an online resource would be ideal or a contact who could look up records locally.
Thomas Crombie's death cert. gives his DoB as 15 Nov 1840, Ireland.  This is the only document with a date in Ireland.  I have all the census, death and marriage certificates for the whole family of John and Susannah and there is no mention of Ireland.

Thanks

John

To find townlands in Co. Down (and Ulster/Ireland):
www.thecore.com/seanruad (be sure to change default setting from exact match & then just search part of the placename in case the spelling isn't correct)
www.ulsterancestry.com/ulster_townlands_by_county.html

John and Susannah are my GGG-Grandparents.
Compare notes?

Thank you
