Pickle & Confectionery Wholesalers
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 19:25 BST (UK) »
Before and after the Boer War, my GGrandad worked as a groom at D.Rees, Pickler and Confectioner Wholesalers in New Brompton. I assume that this place no longer exists. Can someone tell me when it closed, and just how long the factory was in production, please.

Hi Coco-pops

You might have some luck with the directories at http://www.historicaldirectories.org although they only go up to the 1910s.  If you've not used the site before, I would suggest choosing Kent as the location and entering pickle or rees as a keyword.

Many thanks, Casalguidi,

     Have a feeling that I tried that web site a year or so ago. They might have updated, so I will try again. Thanks.

Hi
I am at present researching David Rees (1856-1932), who was the son of David Rees and Eliza Bowens, formerly of Rosemarket, Pembrokeshire.

I would also like to know a little more of his Pickle and Confectionary business after he had dining rooms at 34 High Street, Gillingham, as per the Kellys Directory of 1882.

His step son George Brown seemed to have inherited the business after the death of David Rees.

Keith
Rees: innkeeper/farmer/solicitor, Haverfordwest, Wales; Menzies: innkeeper, Glen Lyon, Scotland;
Tomkins: merchants, London;  Lee:  farmers, Watford Village, Northamptonshire; Pocock, teachers, Bristol; Grace: doctors, cricketers, Gloucestershire; Day: lithographers, London; Clark:  teachers, Folkstone.
Banks: farmer/curriers/shoemakers, East Ham, Bermondsey, East End

Thank you very much grandarog.
This is great to read.
I had read that George Edward Brown was a director and in his younger days was a confectionery traveller and in 1921 was the Company Manager. He was the son of David Rees' wife Anne Priscilla Chalken (Mrs. George Thomas Brown).
It is pleasing to read that George's son carried on the business and referred to in this article and grand child.
I will now look into Mr. G.R. Ripley as a director of Rees' business.
