Hi and thanks for the reply. Suspect there may be an Antliff connection as you are interested in Nottingham. ' My ' Antliff (Joseph) came originally from south Yorkshire but via Nottingham to London and married Agnes Teresa Pettit who came from Southampton. They are from my mother's line

As far as the Rayson name is concerned, there are many areas where they lived. Mine came from Somerset originally where they are ' very thick on the ground '. There is a family site run by a Chris Rayson - one of the northern sections -and I don't have any of my files with me at this moment. Will come back to you later today with the full information on both names.

Thanks again

Hi Larkspur,

re: Antliff.    Joseph Antliff, born 1843 in Leicester ( sorry, not Nottingham as I said earlier) married Agnes Theresa Pettit a.k.a. Mary Agnes Pettit from Southampton, in London 1864 and died 1902. Joseph's father was William, a Tailor, born 1809 in Newark and siblings were William, Henry, James and Sarah Ann. The family appear in the Strand area on the 1851 & 1861. Joseph's son, William was born in 1868. William married Lydia Phipps in 1892 and died in 1914. Joseph and Agnes appear to have parted company as he next appears on the 1891 with a ' wife ' , Elizabeth, and a 14-year old son, George. I haven't taken much interest in them as, although they are a ' bit of a pain ', they are nowhere near as big a problem as other lines in the family who take up all my time !

Rayson site if your friend is interested. Contact used to be as follows, so hope it is still the same. christopher.rayson[at]ntlworld.com. If not, then try Google for the site details. My PC lost everything not long ago including my address book !!!

Regards, BCR

Hi Cp found the possible marriage of William in Nottingham to Naomi Thorpe 13 July 1830. He is listed on the 1851 census with wife Naomi. Cannot find his birth in Newark though. Sorry I had not replied the message reply was not sent to me I presume because it has switched boards.I only found it by accident....Do you have any idea as to the parentage of William?

William and Naomi are my great great great great Grandparents on my mothers side. I've just started looking into the Antliff name and am intrigued by it - it seems to have such a localised (Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire) focus. Does anyone know why?

Hi, not sure why it is so localised must have developed in that area. It seems to be around the North Notts area and Leicestershire later. My gt grandpas brother Samuel Antliff moved to Leicester in the late 1800s. I have no one with the name Joseph in my tree ,

weird dont you think as it was a popular name. Mine are mainly John, William and George with the odd Frederick and Samuel thrown in for good measure. Also spellings Ancliff, Antliff, Aucliff, and my own Antcliffe.
