7 Severn Street, Derby
« on: Friday 21 September 07 21:31 BST (UK) »
I have a relative who circa 1910 was living at the above address. He was working for Rolls Royce at the time and I was wondering if anyone knew if Severn Street was "tied accomodation" for families working for that firm.

I would also love to have a picture of the street if it still exists but cannot find anything on line. Does anyone know a site I may try to search please?

Many thanks
Jackie ;)

I can't answer the first part of your question, but if you look here

http://maps.google.co.uk/

Put Severn Street, Derby in the search box and you can see a map or an aerial view.

I live around the corner from severn street, i do not know if the house were tied to Rolls Royce i do not think so, they are quite nice semis and terreced houses and would have been quite nice at the turn of the century, what was your rellies name, i have 2 employee record books of workers at rolls royce from the 1920-50 period listing there rate of pay address, d.o.b, war service etc. Severn street was originally called Curzon Street, but just after the turn of the century Alvaston was incorparated into the city of Derby and the name was changed to avoid confusion with a curzon street in Derby town centre. on my 1905 map their are no Houses built yet so in 1910 i would guess the houses were fairly new.

Thank you very much for that Gary.

My relative - Great uncle - was George William Hancock born 1883. He was an engineer/ test driver for Rolls Royce. The first record we have of him is from RR who say he was an apprentice with them  in 1912 and the last I have is a mention in a book in 1935 when he has been working on test driving their cars abroad.

Myself and my cousin, who are both researching him, have a birth certificate for one of his children which suggests that 7 Severn Street where the child  was born may have had a motor works attached to it in 1914. Alternatively it may just mean that George worked at the motor works i.e RR.

In any event I wondered if 7 Severn Street could have been tied accomodation as it seems that George worked abroad quite a lot for RR.

It would be lovely if you are able to find anything else out about him for us. To us he is a bit of a mystery man who disappeared off the scene after the death of his wife and neither myself nor my cousin can piece together his history

Thanking you in advance for anything you can come up with
Best wishes
Jackie

Oops sorry meant to say 1906 is the first reference we have from RR was when he was working with RR at Manchester on 20 hp cars for the Isle of Man TT races.

He was from Sheffield originally and obviously moved to Derby with the firm at some stage early 1910's
