Hi Jackie

How are you getting on with this brickwall?  Have you had any luck yet?

hi jan

thankyou for your e-mail forgot about this thread, i have a birth in stoddeston cleobury in 1852 born in the workhouse, mother sarah davies, i have found this one on the 1861 under the name james williams mother sarah father watkin williams in shrewsbury, also on the 1861 there is another james with a family father john mother sarah born shrewsbury, the 1852 birth looks promising as he always said on every census he was born in stoddeston, but still at a complete brickwall dont know which way to go.

kind regards

jackie.

Hi Jackie

Could you let me know the following from James' marriage certificate?:

  • Where he was living at the time of the marriage?
  • How old he was?
  • Who were the witnesses?

Could you also give the details from the 1881 census please?  The full reference would be useful.

Thanks

Jan

Hi Jackie

Thanks for the info :)  If his age was indeed correct on his marriage certificate then that would make his year of birth around 1856.

In the 1881 I see his surname is spelt DAVIS, so I have checked the completed BMD Index on Ancestry for James's birth.

I checked the years 1855, 1856 and 1857 for DAVIS and DAVIES, registration district: Cleobury Mortimer (district for Stottesdon), but found nothing.

I did see the entry in 1852 that you originally found but I'm not 100% sure about that one.  James's age is shown as 24 in the 1881 which would tie in with 1856 year of birth.

I'm wondering whether a baptism search in the Stottesdon parish register might reveal something.  At least we could prove whether he was indeed born in Stottesdon or not.

The Shropshire Archives hold copies of all Shropshire parish registers on microfilm, and I could go and check this for you.  Let me know.

Jan

hi jan

i would love to take you up on that offer, if you find anything i will be forever in you debt, his name did change davis/davies, depending on the enumurator, but on the 1891 and the 1901 he always states stoddeston.

kind regards

jackie.

Hi Jackie,

Just to let you know I am also researching Davis / Davies from Stottesdon - my earliest is John born to Sarah in 1804. Let me know if you want any more info.
