Thomson's in Rathen, Aberdeen
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 18:00 BST (UK) »
Still searching my Thomson family. Peter THOMSON married Susan Sarah GORDON both born in the 1700's and had four known children in Rathen, Aberdeen. There names were William, 1806; Andrew, 1807; Mary, 1809; and John, 1812. Other than William I have little information on these children except christening dates from the IGI. Hoping someone would know something about this family or can tell me where to search in Rathen.

Thank you,
Prairie

Hi, Kathy, thank you very much for answering my query. I haven't been able to find much on the THOMSON family in Rathen. I would like to know more about Susan Sarah GORDON, too. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information in the 1700's or early 1800's. Or I just haven't been looking in the right places. I would like to know when they were born and when and where they died. That sort of thing. I would even like to know about Rathen in those time periods. What was life like...  It just makes them seem more real when you can learn about their lives.

Regards,
Prairie

Had a look at the Old Parish Records for Rathen and found a burial for a Peter Thomson 5 December 1851 described as a pauper/poor .
The 1841 census Rathen Ardglassie shows Peter Thompson aged 75 a pauper and Mgt Thompson aged 50

1851 census Rathen Cairns of Memsie
Peter Thompson head m 86 pauper ( ag lab ) born rathen
Margret Thompson wife m 71  born rathen

The IGI shows that a Peter Thomson married Margaret Jack 7 August 1831 in Rathen .I had a look at that marriage entry in the Parish Register but it did not say if he was a widower.

Could this be your Peter remarried after his wife Susan died ????
Also looked at the christening info for the children . Witnesses for William and Andrew were Wm Webster and James Gibson .
Witnesses for Mary were Will McKay and Jas Milne . Sorry couldn't find John's
Looked at the index for poor relief in Rathen but Peter wasn't listed .
If that is your Peter it is a pity he didn't live a few more years then you could have had a certificate for him !!
I checked the cemetery but there is no head stone .Not a surprise if it is him as a pauper
Hope this helps

Kathy

Hi, I really don't know anything about Peter other than his name. No birth, death, or parent information. He married Susan Sarah Gordon christened 9 Feb 1779 in Strichen. I have no marriage date for them. Susan's parents were Alexander Gordon and Anne Kidd. Alexander was born/christened Cairnie by Huntley 19 Apr 1754. No information on Anne Kidd.

Not aware if Peter remarried or not. He is a mystery.

Thank you for checking on them for me.  :)
