CARPENTER of Starcross or Kenton, Devon

Hi All
My Great Grandfather was born in Starcross Devon, supposedly on the 29th February, 1829, which I realise is an impossible date. He, William Henry Carpenter, was the son of John Carpenter (christened 26th October, 1794, at Kenton Devon, and Mary Brewer, (christened 17Dec, 1790, at Kenton Devon). They were married on 29th May, 1821 in Kenton and he died20th October, 1836, at Kenton. I don't know of any sisters or brothers for William, or any other English information. He came to Victoria Australia inDecember 1852 on the Ticonderoga. I would like to find his birth or christening date, and any information on his siblings. Any assistance would be appreciated

Not sure if Mary was widowed or not as there are no relationships given on this census.

The presence of a son John is helpful.  The grandson means that there was a daughter as well.

This would be the parents of Henry the grandson shown with Mary in 1851.

Go to the LDS site.  At the top of the homepage are 4 yellow tabs marked Home, Search, Share and Library.  If you click on the Search tab, you will get a page with the title Search for Ancestors, All Resources.  On the left side of this page you will find a series of links, the 4th of which is the International Genealogical Index aka the IGI.  Click on this link and you will be there.

As for the Census, there is the FreeCen site and a couple of websites that have specific county information, but at present I think the best resource is Ancestry UK.  It is a pay per view site but well worth the money if you intend to do a lot of research over the next few years. 

Alternatively there are sites  like this one, where you can request a Census lookup from one of the other RC members.

Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it, there are lots of people here who can give you lots of information and advice that will help you find what you need.

As your family seemed to stay in the Kenton area you may find this site useful:

All you need to do is scroll down to Kenton. Dates of christenings are in one column, marriages in the other. Click on the number required which will take you to another page.
Enter the surname you are searching for in the box in the top right corner and click on search/enter. This takes you to all the mentions of your surname in Kenton in marriages/christenings. It is basically a short cut to the information on the IGI.

Using this I have found a couple of possibles for you.
