1841 census please BAKER & MARTIN
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 17:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can any one help me to find more information about my 3 x Gt Grandparents via the 1841 census?  I have their marriage cert which shows they married in Colyton Parish Church on 4th October 1843. The info I have is as follows,,
John Baker.  born Farway Devon circa 1811.  Father Henry Baker, Farmer.
Mary Ann Martin.  born Broadclist circa 1811.  Father, Anthony Martin, Labourer.
Where were they in 1841, who are the mothers and siblings etc.
Also, in 1861, My 2 x Gt Grandmother, ( Mary Ann Baker ) at the age of 13, was not listed as a student but as a Lacemaker. Even more surprising, her younger sister, Harriett at the age of just 9 was also described as a Lacemaker. It does explain why, at the age of 38, 25 years later, my Gt Gt Grandmother signed her marriage cert with a X.  Was the Colyton area known for  hand made lace in the mid 19th century ?
Many thanks,
Ian,

Hi Steve,
Thanks for that, the parents at first look OK but the childrens birth dates don't seem right. The eldest son, John, is shown as born 1832 but my John & Mary Ann didn't marry until 1843 and the children I have are as follows,,
Edward, born 1846.   Henry, born 1847.   Mary Ann, born 1848.  Harriett, born 1849.   and John, born 1856.
Regards,
Ian.

hi ian

1841 broad clyst devon

antony martyn  50 ag lab
elizabeth martyn 50
samuel martyn 20 mason
george martyn 1

if ages of antHony and elizabeth were rounded down to 50
then this could be them however no mary ann
their on the 1851 census as well george is still with them
described as nephew
anthony born c 1785 broadclist devon
possible match on igi father anthony martyn
elizabeth born c 1787 broadclist devon
on igi elizabeth middleton born 1788 broad clyst devon father samuel
this seems to line up with everything else

Hi Deb,
Many thanks for that info, there does appear to have been a great many BAKERS in Devon in the 19th century, but I don't think I can see a connection between my branch and those you have listed. I'll keep the information in case something turns up at a later date.
Once again, thanks for your help.
Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ev,
Thanks a lot for that information, This does appear to be my branch of the Devon Bakers. I'll input the details into my Family Tree Maker program and see how they fit.
Once again, many thanks for you kind help.

Ian
