Service on HMS Victory
« on: Saturday 15 September 07 11:59 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,
I am trying to find out some information aboout a ship that my great-great uncle walter sharkey (from annan in dumfries and galloway) served on during world war 1. On his memorial records within the commonwealth war graves and on his death cert it states he served on HMS Victory. I would like to know what type of ship this was and where it served. I have only managed to come up with the HMS Victory (Napolean) and don,t think this is the same vessel.

Many Thanks
Brandane

HMS Victory, as in the Napoleonic era ship of the line on which Nelson died, is still a commissioned vessel in dry dock at Portsmouth.  In the late 19th century she became a telegraphy school for the Royal Navy.  The school transferred elsewhere in the early years of the 20th century. HMS Victory was restored in the 1920s and is now a memorial to Nelson.

However, the Royal Naval Barracks onshore in Portsmouth is known as HMS Victory.  I would imagine that he was posted there.

Hi Little Nell,
Further to your reply i have managed to get my great uncle walter sharkey's service records from the national archives. My great uncle walter is listed as having served on HMS Victory I and HMS Victory II, HMS Attentive II, Ganges,  Pembroke I,  another ship reading illegible but says in brackets (Lightfoot). I would like to have further information on these ships as know little about this area of my great uncle,s career.

Many thanks

You will find pictures of HMS Attentive here:

HMS Ganges:

Both HMS Ganges and HMS Pembroke were shore establishments in Harwich and Chatham respectively.

Hi Brandane

Lightfoot was a WW1 destroyer launched in August 1915, crew of 104, so quite small.

The illegible word that is before Lightfoot on your service document will be the destroyer depot ship that HMS Lightfoot was attached to.
