I have just found out, that for the sum of £18, you can go for 6 hours to the Registry office in Old Hall street.

For this sum, you will be given a tour and information. They will help you look around, but they wont let you look at the original registers.

This fee applies to searches that you wish to do personally at a Register Office.  You may search the index  but not the registers.  However it has to be arranged in advance and can only be at a time when suitable for the office.
