Monkeys Tump- completed
« on: Friday 14 September 07 06:20 BST (UK) »
Has anyone ever heard of an area known as 'Monkey's Tump' or something similar.
I believe it may have been a place in the Rhodda Valley.
A distant cousin stated that a photo we have was taken there.

Would love to know where it was and the history behind the naming of the place.

Hello this maybe of some help? I was reading my local area magazine(The District Diary) and an article written by a local historian(David Francis) mentioned a place called MONKEYS TUMP/MONKEYS ISLAND. Apparently a local village 'TYLEGARW' near Llantrisant had the nickname when he was a youth. He writes there are a couple of reasons that he has found for this name, one version has a monkey tree growing in the village and the other, a sea captain owning a pet monkey!!  Hopefully this is of some assistance to you.

Hi 100445,
that sounds exactly right.
Couldn't say when the photos was taken, perhaps 1900 or a bit earlier.

thankyou very much,
