RAE Marriage
« on: Friday 14 September 07 04:38 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the RAE/Rea/Reay family from Hutchesontown, Glasgow.
Parent's are:  James Rae and Mary Ann Stewart.
Their children I found on the IGI and bought their birth certificates through Scotlands People:-

Florina RAE b 25/1/1852 - No OPR or Certificate found  This may be an incorrect date on the IGI.

Florina Rae b 25/1/1853 Glasgow   No cert but copy of OPR record.  Witness at birth was a John Rae  *

Mary Reay b 20/8/1855 Glasgow.  Certificate states parent's marriage as 1849 Glasgow and family living at 121 Rose Street, Glasgow.

John Rae b 29/1/1860 Hutchesontown, Glasgow.  Certificate states family living at 162 Crown Street, Glasgow.

John Rae b 27/5/1862 Hutchesontown Glasgow.  Certificate states parent's marriage as 25/7/1849 Glasgow and family living at 74 Rutherglen ?? Glasgow.

****James Stewart Rae b 3/11/1857 Hutchesontown, Glasgow.  Certificate says family living at 162 Crown St, Glasgow.

**** James Rae married Elizabeth Agnes Bolton (b 8/9/1862 Greenock) on 31/12/1880 at Kinning Park, Glasgow.  Found James & Elizabeth on 1881 census and have traced the family from there to the present day.

I have not been able to find the remainder of the family on any census thus far.

I wonder if the * John Rae, witness at Florina's birth, could be a brother of her father James Rae.

The children's birth certificates state that James Rae/Rea was born in Co.Antrim, Ireland and Mary Ann Stewart in Hull.
I understand the spelling of the name Rae depends whether it is an Irish/Sottish or Welsh spelling but in later years in Scotland and NZ it has been spelt RAE.

Although I have the date of James & Mary Ann's wedding i.e. 25/7/1849 in Glasgow I have not been able to find this marriage on Scotlands People nor on films from IGI.
Can I buy a marriage certificate for these people without a folio number, and if so from whom??

Mel

HI
I am descended from James and Mary Ann Rae nee Stewart.
We live in New Zealand and are descended through their son James Rae and Elizabeth Agnes Bolton and then through their son James Rae (b.1881) and his wife Alexandrina Rae nee Baxter (b.1880), James and Alexandrina then moved to New Zealand after they had their children.

Wasn't Mary Ann Rae's mother named Mary Stewart too and was born in Ireland around 1807?

Hello AliR
Sorry I was a little rushed last week
Yes, according to the 1861 census Mary Stewart was aged 54 and born abt 1807 in Ireland. At this stage I have not searched for her maiden name, nor where born in Ireland.
I have a copy of the 1841 census for 62 Bridgegate, Larnarkshire, Glasgow St Marys which shows the following:
James Stewart aged 78 born Ireland Shoe Maker
James Stewart aged 39 born ireland Shop Keeper
Mrs Stewart aged 39 born Ireland (no christian name given)
Elizabeth Stewart aged 15 born England Dress Maker
Mary Ann Stewart aged 11 born England Dress Maker
I have no proof as yet that this is the correct Stewart family.
I have a photo of James & Alexandrina's shop in Skelmorlie & a write up of when the dam burst and the family immigrated to NZ and various other photos I am more than happy to share.
