The Lees/Leigh's
« Reply #18 on: Friday 07 August 09 14:39 BST (UK) »
Hi my name is Keith Schofield and a former inmate at the Leighs back in 1962 - 1968. I was in the house called Maple. I was part of the family of 3 that were kidnapped by our own father 2 weeks before the annual trip to Cleethorpes. I can remember quite a few people who were there at the time. It is quite hard to find anything about the leighs.
Regards Keith

Orphanages, doe's any readers know of a group of 4 or 5 houses known as the Lees./ Leigh Homes, Scholes nr. Holmfirth, Yorks., children from there attended Hepworth school during the 1940/50 period, I drove past them a few years ago and they appeared to be closed, several of the children were school mates.

I was there during the early 60s between 63 and 68. I was part of the family that got kidnapped by our own Father a week before the holidays to Cleethorpes I was in one of the houses called Maple. Mr Broome was in charge as far as I can remember. Plus remember the Round Table taking us on trips etc. I still remember plenty of names of former residents but none of the staff. I have done a load of searches over the years and always come up empty handed. We must have been a secret.

my dad was at both Holly Mount in Tottington and Buckley Hall in Rochdale then sent to an orphanage in Essex also run by the Christian Brothers, when Buckley Hall was closed down.

He entered the system when he was only 10 months old!!!!  His memories are horrific, he's now 77yo and still has nightmares!!!!

He would dearly love to be able to get some information about all three places......

Hi Michael Walsh..I didnt know John Flanagan had died...he was a lovely man and invited us into his home where he gave us so much information on Buckley Hall...I phoned him a few times but suffered a heart attack myself and when I phoned again John was ill himself..then my mum had open heart surgery and I never managed to ring John...that is so sad.....
John knew my uncles who went to Buckley Hall in 1931..one was called Leo and the other Harold Brierley...Leo died in 1996 and went to the reunions.I have never found Harold but he is on the same picture with John Flanagan  that I put on here. Also Leo and Harold are on the other picture with the band..
Later on my father James and younger brother Herbert Brierley were moved to Buckley Hall.By this time Leo and Harold had left there...
It would be lovely to hear about your dads time there...I hope you can get back to me...Peg...
