The "Plough" at Stockingford
« on: Sunday 09 September 07 18:06 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am researching the village local at Galley Common as a hobby, after demolition was refused in 2005, which I have traced back to a sale in circa 1745 between Joshua Kelsey and John Proctor who left the Alehouse and Inn to his grandson John Smedley in 1794 when it was called the "Holly Bush" on "Nuneaton Common" at Stockingford (alias "Stockingford Common") and would be interested in tracing any descendents of the following Licensees or Owners of the "Plough" or "Plough Inn" Stockingford who may have old papers, receipts, drawings, photographs, sales particulars, or documents please?

1) John Archer 1800 to 1811. Mary Archer widow in 1812 who changed the name from "Holly Bush" at Stockingford to "Plough" in 1813.
2) Stephen Arthrell who took the Licence in 1823 (also owner according to 1842 Tithe Map), born Redgrave in Suffolk, married Henrietta Phillips 5 September 1822 at Mancetter. Stephen Arthrell died 20th July 1871, of Oldbury near Hartshill. Henrietta Phillips was born at Uxbridge.
3) Ezra Taylor (nothing known), who transferred the Licence to John Eagle Meigh in May 1846 (who was married to Maria Baker).
4) John Jephcott alias John Jeffcott alias John Jeffcote from circa 1850, born Hartshill.
5) Absalom Bindley owner in circa 1854 and Licensee from 1854, born about 1822 and married to Sally Bindley.
6) William Gadsby Licence from 1857 (nothing known).
7) John Craddock who let the Plough Inn, Stockingford in 1860 to Charles Smith born Barwell, but late of Hinckley Fields, Leicestershire (wife was Sarah Griffiths). John Craddock Esq was a Solicitor who retired to "Fernilee" Leamington Spa and died 31st December 1874, he was the son of William Craddock.
8) Thomas Smith Licence from 1864 (possibly a local).
9) John Barratt alias Barrett, from May to November 1864 (married to Edith), had spent 3 years in Rio on the Railway returning in April 1864, according to his Inquest held at the Plough Inn.
10) John Thomas Jordan, Licence in 1865 (after John Barratt's death in November 1864.
11) George Sims in 1866 (married to Sarah Ann Neale).
12) Benjamin Neale Licence from 1872.
13) Daniel Neale in about 1880 (married to Susannah), who purchased the Inn at some point and sold in 1900.
14) William Flack Adams of Ware, Herts owner from 1900 who let the Inn in 1900 to James Davis (wife was Naomi Davis).
15) Chapel End United F C (Association) played on the Bottom Close at the rear, circa 1910 to World War 2 period.
16) William Cart Licence from 1914.
17) Sold to James Eadie Ltd 5th August 1921, Brewers Burton on Trent.
18) Bill, William Hewitt from 1933.
and other Licensees to present day 2007.

Any family info relating to our local village pub would be most helpful.
Thank you
Mark

Hello Al

Thanks for your post.

I have the Coroner's newspaper report of John Barratt's death (married to Edith Barratt) and if you leave a private message with contact email (best not to leave your email address on a public posting, to avoid spam), then I will email you a few details about him being at The Plough Inn, Stockingford (Plough Inn, Galley Common, after Ward Boundary changes).

Although it is a bit graphic, it says he had returned to the UK after working abroad in Rio, his circumstances, health, name of former employer, his business etc., what she tried to do and how someone went to Nuneaton to get the Surgeon.

I also found a brief account of Edith his widow, when she left the Plough.

Regards Mark
