old street maps
« on: Sunday 09 September 07 16:43 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there were old maps available anywhere of old street in England? Specifically, I was looking for streets in Bristol and Somerset for the mid 1800's.

I assume that the streets haven't changed much but sometimes they do or streets are added or sometimes streets change names.

Thanks-
Jennie

Have you eve ordered from this site. I ask because I have researched some streets that I am interested in and the closer I get to see the street names, it gets extremely blurry. Are the maps that they send you clear and can you see the streets?

Thanks-
Jennie

Jennie.

Before the advent of Old Maps I bought from Rally Maps (now defunct) an Ordnance Survey map of Bisley.  It was surveyed in 1882 and is drawn to a scale of 1/2500 (25.344 inches to the mile).  I have just compared it to the on-line digital map of Bisley  - Ugh!!! - there's no comparison worth talking of!   There are roads named on my paper map which are not named on the digital map the original of which was drawn at 6 inches to the mile I understand.

Make sure the road you look for is on the digital map.  If it is, then a paper repro. of the original will be the better.

Regards

Chas

Hi
When looking at old maps you will find that the definition differs between the different year versions which you can see below the map you are currently looking at.

You can sometimes find things more easily on the latter version and then switch to the earlier one to see how they relate.
You can only zoom in on the 1/10,560 scale not the 1/2500.
You may find that the earliest available on line are around 1870-1880.
Malmesbury- Bishop.
Gloucestershire-Bishop,Hicks,Higgs,Hill,Hooper,Hopkins,Pitcher,Robertson,Stinton,Terret,Woodruff.
Worcestershire-Stinton.
Devon- Borrough or Burrow.

Thanks for all the help. The streets in Bristol?Somerset that I am looking for are as follows (Some of them are very hard to read off of the certificates):

Wilder Street
Queen St. or Green Street
Ambrose Road
Luckwell Road
Clark Street
Meadow Court (?)
Union Road
Rosemont Terrace
Canynge Square
North Street
Cumberland Place
Melbourne Buildings(?)
Hotwell Road
York St.
Gloster St. (?)
Swinnel Road (?)

Unfortunately, I need the maps for a present in about 2 weeks. Steve, I think that you still have contact info. for me??? If anyone else has access to maps that can maybe e-mail them to me....I would be so incredibly grateful.

Jennie

Hi Jennie,

I'll try & send you copies of what I have in the next day or so - in the meantime have a look at this site:

http://www.smilodon.plus.com/mapcd/globe/bristol.gif

It has a super map of Bristol in approx 1850/60 which you can click on to enlarge. It only gives major street names but some of them may be of use
