Well, you haven't given us her parents' names, but if they were Luke and Mercy, thereis an entry onthe NSW BDM index for Mary A. Godwin.
She seems to have died in Stroud in 1889.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au

Free to search index and copies of  full certificates can be got easily and not too expensively.

Hello Mavis

There is a Mary Ann Godwin buried in Neranie Cemetery NSW.

She died 1 Aug 1886,aged 54yrs-headstone states wife of George.
I can not find this death registered on the BDM site.Do you think this might be her?

Hi Annie and All,
I have just been looking at the Neranie cemetery too and I note that the maiden name of this woman stated as Jones, not Collier.
I also see that in the same cemetery are others sharing the names Mercy as well as the Mercy and Luke whose daughter is  the above  NSW BDM entry I have passed on.
It  is odd that there are 2 Mary Ann Godwins.  One with the parental names Mercy and Luke [died 1889]
And another in the same cemetery as Mercy and Luke  [died 1886 ]
what do others think?

Hi Mavis,

It always helps RootsChatters to help you if you indicate where you obtained the information you say you have.  Do you have George's death cert?  What else do you know about George?  How do you know his middle name?  How do you know that he married a Mary Ann COLLIER, that this was ca 1864 in NSW, and that she was born ca 1840 in England  ???

The NSW BDM indexes can be searched online free at:
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/

There is a record of a George GODWIN death (no middle initial) at Hillgrove in 1897, parents unknown.

The only marriage of a George GODWIN to a Mary A(nn) between 1788 and 1897 is George GODWIN to Mary A JONES in 1852.
There are no marriages of a Mary COLLIER in that period.

GODWIN children born to parents George & Mary between 1788 and 1906 (Mary A marked with a #; Mary Ann marked with a *) are:
1854 Thomas H #
1857 Elizabeth E (Gosford) #
1859 Mary A (Gosford) #
1861 George P (Gosford)#
1863 Harriet C (Port Stephens) #
1865 John R (Port Stephens) #
1867 Matthew M (Port Stephens) #
1869 Luke J (Port Stephens) #
1870 Charles E (Patricks Plain) *
1873 Emma Florence (Port Stephens) *
1875 Eliza (Inverell) *
1875 Lillias Jane (Port Stephens) *
1877 Hannah Maria (Port Stephens) *
1883 Emily G (Wingham)#

Only 8 Mary GODWIN deaths in the whole searchable period including:
1889, GODWIN Mary A, parents Luke J & Mercy, at Stroud

Regards,

JAP

Hello

The Mary Ann who died 1889 with father Luke was born the same year as she died.

re the Mary Ann who died 1886-if you click on the photo of the grave-no where does it mention the maiden name Jones.
What the gentleman who runs this site has tried to do is match these records with BDMs.
There is a George Godwin marrying a Mary Ann Jones in 1852.But whether this is the actual Mary Ann or not is hard to say.

Mavis -where did you get the maiden name Collier from?
Was it from her husband's death cert or the birth of a child?
Its sometimes can be tricky I spent many years looking for my gt gt grandmother only to find the maiden name on her children's birth certs and her death was in fact her previous married name-she had been a widow when she married.

So it seems that George Garlick GODWIN (died in 1890 aged 87) & Mary Ann (JONES) GODWIN, daughter of Luke J JONES & Mercy (died in 1886 aged 54 yrs a/c to inscription) are a red-herring i.e. are not connected to Mavis's request.
{Incidentally, Luke J GODWIN, son of George Garlick GODWIN & Mary Ann JONES, had children with an Elizabeth Mercy/Mercy Elizabeth - just a co-incidence of the name Mercy.
And it looks as though the 1886 death of Mary Ann GODWIN snr nee JONES, daughter of Luke J JONES & Mercy has simply been missed off the NSW online BDM index - perhaps a confusion with the 1889 death of Mary Ann GODWIN jnr, baby daughter of Luke J GODWIN & his wife Mercy.}

So we are left with the death of George GODWIN, no age or middle name and parents unknown in Hillgrove in 1897.

Time to wait for Mavis to come back and indicate where she got her info about George's middle name, wife's name, wife's age and birthplace, etc, etc?

Thank you all!   More information...........
George Francis Godwin, from his death certificate,,,,name, birth in Worthing, Sussex. 1844.
Marriage certificate...marriage to Mary Ann, no surname known,

George's father was Thomas Godwin, mother Mary Ann, maiden name unknown.
I feel that Mary Ann (wife of George) died sometime after 1874, as she had a child in 1874. George remarried to Jane Biddle. Date unknown.
George died from exhaustion, he had a child aged 1 year when he died at age 53.
