« on: Thursday 06 September 07 21:20 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to find my great grand parents and great 2x grand parents and any family they have.i have these names
Great Great Granddad was called:
Frederick Charles Barnes and G G Gran-mother: Lilly Rose Barnes not sure birth years,i would imagine 1860 to 1870.
Great Granddad was:
Frederick William Barnes and Great Gran Mother: Lilly Rose Ivy Barnes i think these was born around 1896.
I been told they are burried at ST Marys in Wareham.
Is there anybody related to the Barnes family or know where i can look them up ?.i cant seem to find them on the census.
          Any help would be great.

Hi Pete,

Have you had a look at www.dorset-opc.com?  It has a variety of data;
parish registers, census, directories, maps etc.

On FreeBMD there is a birth registration:

Barnes  Frederick George W  Mar Q 1890   Wareham  5a 288

could this be your gt.grandad?

Hi Nanny Jan,
Thanks for the reply, yes i have check the Dorset OPC and freeBMD,my great aunty gave me the names, but she never mention George in the name, but it could be.for some reason,my Barnes family dont want to be talk about the relatives,by the Barnes that are living.I know my nan parents was both from Barnes family.Lilly Rose Ivy Barnes was born 1896 she had children with Frederick William Barnes,Lilly maiden name was Barnes.Cant find no marriage for them, cant even find my nans Gladys Barnes or Jean Barnes birth records,i know Gladys Barnes was born about 1922.

              Cheers Pete

Just spotted this thread !

If you look at

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,282151.msg1655163.html#msg1655163

... you will see I quote a site I found quite by chance, which has a few Barn(e)s from 1803 on it ... they married into 'my' Sturney's (I think ...)

Hi

Not everyone is listed on the census(es) - Some of my ancestors are from Norwich and I know that a few were not listed on the 1901 census even though trade books show he held a license for a pub and the building was completely missed.

Don't rule out spelling variants eg Barns. As people were poorly educated or listed it incorrectly spelt at the time.

Strange if living relatives aren't giving you the full picture? or is it a case that they just don't know? or are they definitely trying to hide something, eg illegitimacy.

Do you know if these names you have been given are correct? If so best to trace your ancestors, back through known birth / marriage certificates or parish register if place of birth(s) / marriage(s) is known at Dorset Record Office (if they have one? and you are local to it - as this may be cheaper than ordering certificates that could be wrong).  Although people still lied on birth / marriage certificates - inventing a fake father to hide the stigma of illegitimacy.

It maybe a case that Frederick c1896 was illegimate and living with a grandparent will his mother was away to support him / them (often working as servants).

It can be really annoying when you can't find your ancestors - don't give up, i'm waiting for the next census 1911 released in 2012.

Good luck

GJB
