Thank you all, for your various suggestions and input. I think that I will have to bite the bullet and send for her marriage certificate but I thought it worthwhile to see if anyone had her in their tree or surname interests.

I have trawled my way though acres (it seems) of census entries (the original images) but (although the surname causes some problems to transcribers at times) I have found absolutely nothing that resembles Penninah - however one chooses to spell it. I have also ploughed my way through
Peninnahs in the 1901 census but have not been able to make any possible links with 'my' Penninah.

I have a photograph of her wedding to Samuel and was hoping that I might share it with other interested parties.

Thanks again
Nell

I received the marriage certificate today and my Penninah turns out to be Paulina, born 1887, daughter of Enoch and Ellen Bosson of Tunstall.

She appears in the 1891 census as Paulia (Basson) so why and when she became known as Peninnah remains a mystery.

I have now traced this branch back to the 1841 census and they were firmly rooted in Tunstall from the mid 1800s. Her grandfather Noah was born in Leek in 1801.

Another jigsaw piece in place.

Many thanks again for your help and support.  :)

And finally - an update:

I have received a copy of her son Stanley's death certificate from Australia on which parents are listed (if known).

Stanley's mother is named as Pauline Bosson (with the information having been given by Stanley's widow, who evidently knew of her as Pauline rather than Peninnah!).

My mother - Samuel Nevitt's niece - born 1920 - always thought of her as Penninah and was surprised to find out that she was actually called Pauline.

I don't suppose we will ever find out the when and why of the name change but you never know. One day I might just hear from one of Stanley's Australian descendants as he had three children out there and one of them may have the family story.
I live in hope.  :)

Penninah Bosson was the daughter of Enoch and Mary Bosson (nee Appleby). Enoch's parents were Noah and Ellen Bosson (nee Handley).
I agree that names occurring on census forms look more like Pauline, However I understand that she was christened as Penninah because the story (told by the family) suggests that the minister present did not recognise the name and had to be reminded that it occurs in 1 Samuel Ch1 Ver2 in the bible.
Since the names are different on the census forms (Paulia (1891), paulina(1901)), this could possibly have been a problem with the spelling of an unfamiliar name by the enumerators
I know that a nephew knew her as Auntie Penninah.
Penninah's second marriage was to Bill Strong, and I understand from family recollections that they had two children, Ken and Ernest.

Hello RUFUS

It is good to hear of a family connection to Penninah (I have always known of her as Penninah) but she led me a merry dance trying to identify her in the census returns and BMD records with this variety of transcribed names.

My mother (her niece) remembers corresponding with her son Stanley after he had emigrated to Australia and I have traced some of the records relating to his life in Victoria but I have reached a brick wall with trying to trace his children.

If you have further information I would love to share it - either on here or  through a private message.

Nell

Hi Nell,
My greataunt was Penninah Bosson and one of my distant cousins sent me a photo of the wedding in 1908. He obtained it from the Nevitt side of the fmily.
Have you seen it?

Hi Cliff

I have a fairly poor copy of the wedding photo but would love a copy of your in case it is clearer than mine. I have a lot of other family photos including one of Samuel's mother Martha (Fryer) said to have been taken when she was 18 which would date it to about 1868.

Best wishes

Nell

Hi Nell,
My photo is 4MB. I am new to this site, where do I send the photo to?
It will be interesting to comare them.
Also how many people have you identified at the wedding? We have only identified about 20 out off 55!

Thanks for the offer of info on the Nevitts. The only reason I got info on my greataunt Penninah was that I was facinated by her name. The only certificate I have is her wedding certificate.
The information from you and Cathy is more than enough for now.

Penninah"s great-grandfather was  Samuel Bosson (born about 1769) who married Sarah SIGLEY/SHRIGLEY on 30 Oct 1787 in St Edward the Confessor, Cheddleton, Stoke-on-Trent. They had at least 10 children. I have to go back to my orignal source to sort out Sarah's name, I will probably do this during one of my yearly visit to UK!
Cheers
