John Edward Boshell - mother?

Have John Edward Boshell, marrying Susan Dowzard 14th July 1874 at St.Thomas, Dublin. He lived at 83, Seville Place and was a ship's mate. His father, also John Edward Boshell was a mercantile clerk. John died in June 1888 aged 47 +8mths. Therefore was born in 1840/41
I would love to discover who his mother was, either from his birth or his parents' marriage.
All the addresses I have for this family are in Dublin.
Could anyone suggest where I might look next?

Hi Kooky,

I did a quick search on Griffiths and on the Dublin 1911 Census, as I'm sure you did too. No Dowzards anywhere in Ireland in Griffiths and 2 families in Dublin in 1911.

I can see 2 possiblilites: the Dowzards moved to Dublin betwen Griffiths and 1874 when your John Edward got married, or he met her on one of his overseas journeys as a ship's mate. Of the two I think the first is most likely since the male line continued in Dublin.

What is the earliest record of Dowzards in Dublin you have found from directories etc?

There's the 1851 census - Heads of Household for Dublin only - it's in the National Archive and also on a CD.

I found it useful to point me in the right direction mid-1800s ... maybe someone would be able to do a lookup for you.

Note that poorer households often weren't in Griffith's Valuation because of subletting, etc - even if the name isn't there, the family could be living in the street.
