Hi everyone

I am finallly back into my genealogy after a month and abit off due it being full on at work - retail- and I am currently going through my old postings etc.

I have had no luck in regards to locating Captain Thomas's family in Hull, Yorkshire but word on the family grape vine is that we are related to the Kent Matsons. I am waiting on a reply from a fellow researcher who has done loads more work than me on this line than me so hopefully they can fill in the gaps.

Thanks for all those sites Janice. Great list.

Also I had some great help from a lady in NS who gave me some insight into the area of Halifax and New Foundland, where my ggrandfather George Matson was born in 1845.

Many thanks to you all for you ideas and snippets of info I appreciate it all.

Regards Troods

Hi again do you have the marriage of Nicholas Hall to Ann Matson on the 15th March 1852 at Wye, East Ashford, Kent?
Ann is named in father’s (John) will of 1854.
1861 census shows the family living at St. Marylebone with Ann aged 37 and Nicholas aged 35. Sisters Charlotte 27 and Emma (Steddy) 29 are recorded at the same address.
Nicholas and Ann have 3 children all born Marylebone -
Ellen aged 1
Mary C. (no age given)
Nicholas J. aged 7

Troods, I am conferring with Michael Matson of Dublin family, originally from Cork.
The 1st known of this line is a Capt. John Matson forn 1790  in Gothenberg,
Sweden who moved to Cork and married a Rebecca Wheeler.  I even have his photo when he was much older.  Their children were Benjamin b. 1816 d. 1890
Thomas b. 1819 did not know what happened to him ( I think he is our descendant)
John b. 1822 George b. 1824 Isaac b. 1829 (died at sea)
In the 1830s in Newfoundland there were 3 Matson Captains, John Thomas and George.  I think these were him and 2 sons.  I have a lot of info too much to send, I was previously 99% sure we were from Hull,, I thinkk I was wrong.  I also have photos of  Johns Sons (2)  Regards  Ken  Matson.
PS  There is a lot of likeness in the photos, especially of your George and John Jnr.  Perhaps DNA will work it out.

According to all the research I've carried out, 'Isaac' is an unusual name for the Matson family.
I wonder if these records could refer to a son of the Isaac born in 1829?

Record in Auckland Public Library that in 1874 Isaac Matson (25) to New Zealand “Loch Awe” 22nd June 1874.

This is the death entry for the husband of Martha nee Graham. Fairly conclusive since one of their children was named Isaac Carroll Matson.

As you say Isaac is an unusual Matsonname however,I  do know that some are tight with their money (joke).
Isaac Matson (dob 14.7.1829)
This was the youngest son of John (1) Sweden
He is thought to have been the victim of cannibalism on the part of his crew when they lost the trade winds and provisions ran out.  His crew were subsequently hanged.  I have nothing to substantiate this but I understand that this information was gathered by Douglas Matson, through conversations with his father and other relatives.  I the story is true, there must be a record somewhere.
Regards Ken Matson

What a fascinating event. I wish I could work out if there is a link to your line and those I know about.
While on the unusual names for Matson, I have this record -
Births, 2nd quarter 1886, Faversham, Kent, Vol 2a Vol 867 Douglas Matson. Also Arthur James Matson (on the same page) his twin, or a cousin?
Do you happen to know if this is an ancestor of the Douglas Matson you refer to?
In the ancestors of the above Douglas, born 1886, there is the family name Isaac on the mothers (Orpin) side so that would also look like a possible link?

Here is an account where they say it almost happened to another ship's officers...( last paragraph )  :P
http://books.google.ca/books?id=I_S1D8cnTiEC&pg=PA161#v=onepage&q&f=false

I wonder if Captain Ross Mattson was related to the ancestors  ;D Matt's son or Matsson being the original form of the name, father Mats/Matt
( p.s. there are lots of Isaac Mattson, Matson listed here http://search.labs.familysearch.org  )

Have you ever contacted anyone descended from George Matson & Rebecca Hoar to see if they have more?
( Helena A (Matson) Brinkman c.1851, Thomas Wm Matson c. 1852 ( also a master mariner) George Matson c.1857, Rebecca ( Matson) Frazer c.1856, Harriet E. (Matson) Watts c.1861)
